Live and Let Die | Ian Fleming

I didn‘t like this student‘s version much because it left out the whole voodoo narrative. i am not sure if it was particularly thrilling for my students. But then the original is so full of stereotypes and degrading language at least this was not given in this version.

I am currently reading four different novels with four different classes. Of course they are the students versions which are easier and have less different narratives but I get mixed up a lot - especially when the lessons are one after another. Last time it told the students The Hound of the Baskervilles was written by Ian Fleming. 🙈

I am posting one book per day from my extensive, and ever growing, TBR shelves. Some are new and some have been on my shelves for years, so long I don't remember why I originally bought them.

113/150 If this was my first exposure to James Bond, if I had never seen any of the movies, then I know I wouldn't be the JB fan I am today. He's not a likable character, cold, cruel and manipulative, not a heroic figure at all. Putting aside the racism and misogyny of the era its written in, it's still poorly paced with paper thin characters. 3 ⭐⭐⭐

Andrew65 It‘s strange how the films came from these books. 6mo
5feet.of.fury The movie is one of my faves 6mo

RamsFan1963 @5feet.of.fury It might be sacrilegious, and I do love Connery as Bond, but I think Daniel Craig is my favorite in the role. Of course, the first Bond movie I remember seeing was Live And Let Die with Roger Moore, so you can only go up from there. It does have one of the best theme songs, by Paul McCartney & Wings. 6mo
Ruthiella Agree that Live and Let Die is one of the best theme songs from the franchise. Connery is my favorite Bond, I think, though I too grew up watching Moore. 6mo
5feet.of.fury @RamsFan1963 pierce brosnan/goldeneye was my intro & I do like that and the Connery stuff, but the Daniel Craig movies & portrayal are just fantastic 6mo

ShyBookOwl Nice! I've never thought to read these books, even though I enjoy the movies 😅 6mo
RamsFan1963 @ShyBookOwl I've seen all the movies, but this is my first Ian Fleming original 6mo
Bookwomble I read it a couple of years ago, and was surprised at how brutal it was. 6mo

1965 London, 007 is out of commission and N needs him to meet the Queen. Who ya gonna call? His sister Jane! Jane Bond is a lesbian whose drinking and womanizing could rival her brother‘s until she meets a beautiful secret agent. Silly fun. The bad guys are the Sons of Britain (SOBs) trying to restore Edward (and Wallis Simpson) to the throne. https://cannonballread.com/2023/08/kiss-the-girls-and-make-them-spy-an-original-...

While I had a little trouble getting into the story, once there I was captivated. It was as Bond as it gets.

We‘re going to Russia post-brainwashed-M-assassination to join their side to learn who they want assassinated & stop it!

There‘s a Bond girl. Torture. Death. Mind control! Mistakes. Escapes. Action! Like I said, very old school Bond.

Fun short read! I‘d read another.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

dabbe I knew Horowitz did Sherlock pastiches, but Bond, too? #woohoo! 🤩 8mo
Twainy @dabbe I love Sherlock so I‘m interested 😁 8mo

Ian Fleming, I'm pretty sure that women have never smelt like a combination of freshly mown hay and sweet pepper, I can not even imagine what that smells like. That's some imagination!

This book is of course filled with the usual racism and misogyny found in the previous books but that aside there's something compelling about these, the ridiculousness of the plot I guess is enough to keep me turning those pages.
