Bailedbailed

This had an interesting start, but I‘m just not enjoying the main character or the writing style. It has a YA tone but definitely adult content. Just not for me. #hailthebail

After 235 pages, I just don't care enough to read another 300 pages. #HailTheBail

TheBookgeekFrau @LiteraryinPA Yes! Reading time is too precious for books that don't beg to be picked up 3w

I started reading this with so much expectations considering the high ratings everywhere. But, it turned out to be such a dull. Two men, one architect and one serial killer, the only common factor was they were both in Chicago.

It should have been 2 separate books for completely separate audiences. “Depraved“ was such a great book on H H Holmes and completely satisfies the true crime, serial killer bug in you.

dabbe #hailthatbail! 🙌🏻 And heckya to #betterbooksahead 🧡🤎💛 1mo
Lesliereadsalot I couldn‘t get into this one either. And so many loved it! 1mo
Bookish_Thoughts I read this years ago and remember thinking it read more like two separate books. I wasn‘t a fan, even though I‘ve liked most of his books. 1mo

I've tried so hard with this, cos y'know, it's Stephen King. I have to bail. I just don't engage with the characters. Sorry #LosersClub this one is not for me.

#Hailthebail @BarkingMadRead

BarkingMadRead It happens! And really, nobody is very likable 🤣 2mo
jackilynn Definitely up there as one of my least favorites of his. 2mo
KathyWheeler I finished, but, boy, was it difficult to do so! 2mo

AllDebooks @KathyWheeler hats off to you for persevering 🙌 2mo
KathyWheeler @AllDebooks 😊. I‘ve never read a King book I‘ve disliked so much before. I thought maybe the ending would help, but no. 2mo

I listened to this book for an hour, and that was all I could bear. I kept waiting for it to become interesting and it just didn‘t. #HailTheBail #BetterBooksAhead

IriDas A few decades ago I watched BBC‘s versions of James‘ works. They did a good job of making it more interesting. When people ask me if I ever like the movie better, I drag out this situation. 3mo

I don't get the hype or why this even has a mainstream publisher. Was it popular on Booktok or something? You can find better self-published books on KU. Dark? Please, there's zero depth or emotional attachment so it doesn't feel dark. Romantic? The courtship is more painful than the torture scenes. Comedy? A light tone and irrational characters isn't enough to make it funny.

#HailTheBail

julesG I'm glad I gobbled it up on audio, this way I didn't notice the shortcomings. 😁 3mo
Leniverse @julesG Hah, yes I can see how good narrators might make a difference. 3mo
monkeygirlsmama I enjoyed this one in #audiobook format despite it not being my typical genre. I agree that the narrators definitely helped bring it home for me. 3mo

Definitely in the minority on this book, but I lost interest halfway through. I didn‘t connect with any of the characters and the “I don‘t like this” vibes started to outweigh the “I love this!” vibes. #HailtheBail 🚀

Aims42 @dabbe The #hailthebail hashtag is so empowering 😁💕 I started a new book and already it‘s a better fit 5mo
IndianBookworm Just finished the book, it's decent but even I do not get the hype! (edited) 4mo

Aims42 @IndianBookworm Right?! I found myself thinking of anything else but reading, I even thought of doing laundry instead! That was my “lightbulb moment” to pick a different book 😆 4mo
IndianBookworm @Aims42 what an epiphany! 😂 I think it'd be a great movie though, lots of characters, beautiful setting and events, and less PREACHY❤ 4mo
Aims42 @IndianBookworm Oh man, I don‘t even know if I made it to the preachy parts 🤣🤣🤣 I bailed during the bachelorette “seminar”. It could be a great movie though, I could definitely see some actresses in the role of Phoebe and Lila 4mo
IndianBookworm @Aims42 hahaha, I think you passed a few but the frequency increased a lot more towards the end! 😓 4mo
Aims42 @IndianBookworm Oof 🫠 Okay, glad I bailed when I did then 😆😮‍💨 4mo

Bailing 100 pages in. Scalzi is always hit or miss for me. I love the idea of this book - the moon has, in an instant, turned to cheese and no one knows why or how it what is next. Scalzi uses interviews, news reports and (for me) way too many pov. The book is creative but I have been sitting here for the last 40 or so pgs wishing I was reading Blake Crouch's Project Hail Mary instead so I am going to stop now

TheSpineView I get that with Scalzi. Loved Project Hail Mary! 5mo
ChaoticMissAdventures @TheSpineView Scalzi writes women WAY better, but this one is so scattered, and at 100 pages you never hear from the same person twice, I think I just want something more tightly told then this. And impossible space missions just reminded me of how much I loved PHM. 5mo

After 43 days, I am calling it. I can‘t push myself any further. I tried the digital arc that I received, then I added the audio, then I added a print copy, in hopes that I would be able to push thru. I love this period of US History, but the slow meandering plot just did me in. Also, at this part of the book, some things were added to the story that I felt just slowed it down further and didn‘t make sense with where things were going. I read 👇🏻

intothehallofbooks the last few chapters and, honestly, I wish I‘d have stopped trying weeks ago. Many people love this one, so don‘t take only my word for it. It just sadly wasn‘t the book for me. Thanks to Knopf for allowing me to read this one. I love Dust Bowl stuff and it stinks that this one didn‘t work out for me. 5mo

bookaholic1 At least you tried right..there's alot of books to read out there than continue reading one you can't get into 5mo
intothehallofbooks @dabbe @bookaholic1 I should have bailed sooner! 5mo
intothehallofbooks @Ruthiella I was curious about her other books before trying this one, but now I don‘t think I‘ll be picking them up 😬 5mo
dabbe @intothehallofbooks Well, next time a book doesn't hit you in just the right way, #hailthatbail and get outta there! 🤣😍🤩 5mo
Aims42 Thank you for the honesty. I was next in line on my library‘s wait list for this, but it does not sound like what I want to read right now. I canceled my hold, hopefully the person behind me is excited now 😄 5mo
intothehallofbooks @Aims42 You can always go back to it if the mood strikes you! 5mo
Aims42 @intothehallofbooks That‘s exactly what I thought too 😁👍 5mo
