#2022readingbracket November pick @chasjjlee

Not many 5 stars, and the tagged isn't one of them, but I learnt the most out of this book.

The only reason this isn't 5 stars is that it's basically taken me a month to read it... it's so slow!

Librarybelle I‘ve yet to read anything by Fraser! 1y
ravenlee I‘m reading The Year of Lear, and have been surprised by how much of the book is about the Gunpowder Plot. I knew almost nothing about it (standard two sentences in kiddo‘s history book, basically) and it‘s fascinating. This one appeals because of that, but I wonder if it would feel redundant. Of course, it could be years before I get to it, and by then it would all be new to me! 😆 1y
jenniferw88 @ravenlee tbh, I'm not surprised that the Year of Lear features the Gunpowder Plot heavily - it was the year immediately after it, and all the trials/executions took place then. 1y

jenniferw88 @ravenlee I don't think it would feel redundant - it focuses on the lead up and aftermath as well as the main plot. 1y
ravenlee Good to know - I‘ll add it to my list! I was surprised because I expected Year of Lear to be about Shakespeare, and it‘s much more about James and his reign. Which makes sense, as it‘s Shakespeare‘s world and what influenced him, it just wasn‘t what I thought. And it‘s very good, even for someone who just dabbles in the bard‘s works. 1y
jenniferw88 @ravenlee if you want, email me (irene_gulliver@yahoo.co.uk) your address and I'll send the book on, as I had it second-hand and I'm not likely to read it again. 1y

“Remember remember
The fifth of November
Gunpowder, treason and plot”

One of my favourite days of the year, wrapping up warm and heading out to see #fireworks on Guy Fawkes Day. Guy Fawkes - the only man ever to enter Parliament with honest intentions 😂😂

#MarchIntoThe70s #Day18 #AnarchyInTheUK One Of the original English anarchists is Guy Fawkes.November 5th 1605, a group of English Catholics hid 36 barrels of gunpowder in a cellar underneath the Westminster House Of Parliament.Though Robert Catesby led the group, the devout Guy Fawkes is more remembered after his capture & torture. They were hoping to unseat King James I & bring back the Catholic Church after Henry VIII‘s Protestant Reformation.
