Bloody Genius | John Sandford
post image

New book from one of my favorite authors. I prefer the Lucas Davenport novels, but I‘ll take Virgil Flowers in a pinch.

Inland | Ta Obreht

Obreht is back with her lush lyrical prose, this time set in the lawless, drought-ridden lands of the Arizona Territory in 1893. Meet Nora, an indomitable frontierswoman, and Lurie, an outlaw turned cameleer for the Camel Corp. Their stories told in different timelines - Nora's in one day, Lurie's over decades. The ending blew me away. Very slow paced but beautifully written. Obreht is truly a literary genius.

Gods of Jade and Shadow | Silvia Moreno-Garcia

Definitely gonna be one of my top reads of the year! I loved everything about it! It had got very strong character portrayals (even the minor roles!), and plot and pacing were on point! Felt like it was for YA but not targeted/marketed as so. Still, it was a very good read! Strong pick!

BUT ...
🛑 Most assuredly a companion to Deliverance Dane (not a standalone)!
🛑 Annoying characters all around - Picking up 10yrs later when we‘re all adults adulting in that boringly adult way! Work no matter how you spin the spell is never magical!
🛑 I‘m not sure how the interludes tied to the main story???

In short, if you devoured Dane, you‘ll enjoy this! Haven‘t read DD?? Start there!

This wasn‘t what I was expecting! I have not read the source material, so I found myself a little confused and missing all of the magic readers seem to connect with this world. Overall, I‘d vote:

✅ Lovely magical interludes of ancestral past (would‘ve loved more of this!)
✅ A race to the potion finish.
✅ Very well researched - ✋ To the point of feeling a very scholarly drag on the plot lines.

Like SITD, our two protagonists meet across a battlefield. They should be enemies. They should stand against each other. But the Spinners have spoken, their destinies are entwined, their stories spun from the same thread of yarn. When your fate is tied to the sea, but what will the tides bring? So good!!

She “would be Dagaz. A new dawn.”

But who‘s side will she defend? Tova is a Kyrr Truthtongue the sea deposited on Svell shores. She‘s a woman without a tribe, enemy in her own home, an orphan in all others.

“I‘d been born in the mountain, but I became a
man on the fjord.”

Halvard (the brother of Fiske/Iri) is a Nadhir warrior of some influence.

Which is probably my favorite thing about Young‘s writing. While most authors are manufacturing creative wartime tactics, Young is mired in the history of hand-to-hand compact, small, tight-knit tribes, enemies within walking distance, movement on foot, complete devastation of entire villages at the end of an axe.

“War is faithful to come looking for us time and
again.”

I ♥️ Young‘s writing having devoured both the wintry Sky In The Deep and this springtime story in a weekend! Though companion novels, they track very different tales. SITD is a bloody, battlefield romp in the aftermath of war. TGTSGB plots the political strategy of war. “Hagalaz: complete destruction, the storm that devours.”
