Somebody I Used to Know | Wendy Mitchell
post image
Mehso-so

Wendy was, without a doubt, an extraordinary individual with many outstanding qualities. Her strength of personality coupled with her incredible drive, determination, and positivity in the face of what for lesser mortals would've been a devastating diagnosis is inspiring and humbling.

However, I was not in the right place for this...perhaps no more medical memoirs for me for a while...

I'm sure others would find this a source of hope.

Montie Sunshine is recovering from having 11 teeth extracted! But the real purpose of this post is that I am looking for book recommendations for dealing with #dementia or #alzheimers
How to communicate and not get frustrated. I'm about to fly to Florida and evaluate if I need to take the keys away.

Bookwormjillk No advice but wishing you luck 2mo

AmyG Poor guy. Hope he feels better soon. 2mo
Sace Wish I had something to recommend. I‘m sending you good vibes and hoping the best for you (and Montie). 2mo
mandarchy Thanks everyone! Montie is enjoying his pain meds, soft treats (Gerber meat sticks) and lots of TLC. 2mo
ncsufoxes My dad passed away last year from Lewy Body dementia. My mom had & has found support groups helpful. They‘ve helped her process what she & my dad went through. She‘s found most of them on FB. In some states local libraries have social workers on staff that can help find local resources. Senior centers too can have connections to resources. Good luck, I know it‘s a hard journey. 2mo
Ruthiella No tips but wishing you luck and strength. ❤️ 2mo
Butterfinger Will definitely be thinking of you during this time. 2mo
TEArificbooks It‘s fiction but was good 2mo
TEArificbooks Also fiction and a light fluffy romcom but the main characters mother has dementia and their family has to figure out what to do 2mo
mandarchy @ncsufoxes thank you! My sincerest condolences. I'm still at the point of suspecting that both my parents are having reality issues. They live across country and their stories didn't always align 2mo
mandarchy @TEArificbooks I will take a look at this one. Using the hashtags, I have downloaded one book and put another on hold. Thank you! 2mo
Cuilin I recommend asking your local librarian for help. They‘ll point you in the direction of the most recent information. I‘d also check out Alzheimer‘s Association online. Good luck. 2mo

I am lucky that my parents are into their 70s and in very good health. But now, my Dad is going through the process to be diagnosed with dementia. My sister & I are doing what we do best - turning to books. These are some of the recs I‘ve received. She has picked up The 36 Hour Day, the Care Giver‘s Guide to Dementia and Dementia With Dignity.
If there are glaring gaps that would help us navigate the coming years, I‘d be grateful to hear them.

ChaoticMissAdventures So sorry about your dad. My ex mother-in-law is caring for her mother who is 94, she said the 36 hour day was the best thing she has read for it. She also recommends finding a local support group, and if you can getting into therapy. I hope you and your mom and sister can help each other. 3mo
Ruthiella Sending you strength. ❤️ 3mo

This book was a reminder of why I love StoryGraph‘s reading challenges so much. I never would have discovered such a lovely story without #52bookclub25‘s bonus prompt: set in New Zealand. It‘s a mystery that will break your heart to pieces. The author did a fantastic job of bringing the struggles of caring for someone with Alzheimer‘s to the page. I couldn‘t put this book down.

The audiobook was great. She brought Emily‘s emotions to life.

Finished this today on the plane home. I really loved it! I only found out now there is a film. The writing is so well done and I just had so much love and sympathy for Maud throughout. It's incredibly original without coming across as gimmicky, at least for me. 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟

I arrived in Cape Town late afternoon and have nothing to do tonight - feeling very useless/unpopular/lonely. I went for a walk and saw some cute squirrels - we don't see/have them where I live. Aside from a bit of prep I need to do for the 3 days in the office, I plan on reading more of the tagged book, which I was enjoying on the plane.

Kristin_Reads A walk and a book sounds lovely! I visited many years ago and think that Cape Town is a beautiful city… and the cute squirrel is a bonus! 5mo
MommyWantsToReadHerBook @Kristin_Reads it is beautiful and it was a beautiful day. Sadly these days I always stay a few minutes from the office = far from the beach when I come here. It was still a lovely arrival 5mo
BarbaraBB Enjoy your time in Cape Town, a place I really want to visit! 5mo

4 Stars • Translated from the Hebrew by Stuart Schoffman • "The Tunnel" by A.B. Yehoshua is about Zvi Luria, a retired engineer, obsessed with an unfinished tunnel in Jerusalem. It explores themes of dementia, identity, and the connection between personal and national history in modern Israel.

Even with less than 100 pages, Backman can infuse a story with depth and emotion.
