Station Eleven | Emily St John Mandel

I first came to this #bookmatch when considering books with cults--Delicious Foods (which I promise I will stop posting about) isn't EXACTLY a cult per-se...but then I saw the #evilkin prompt and thought that could work too. It's not exactly kin in DF, but people (or substances) that pretend that level of closeness... In the end, these books have numerous points of comparison but pretty different moods/effects, which I always find interesting.

emtobiasz Oof. Delicious Foods is rough reading. So good, though! 6y
Natasha.C.Barnes @emtobiasz That's a full review in a nutshell right there! 😂 6y
emtobiasz @Natasha.C.Barnes About a month after I read it I found myself trying to push it on everyone just because I wanted to be able to talk to someone about it. Like, "I'm not sure you'll like this, but you should read it anyway." ? 6y

In hour 4 I paused Oyeyemi and picked up Jackson, but these books are way too similar--I need to read just one at a time I think! 😁 #deweysreadathon #bookmatch #bookmates

Hehe! #bookmail !!!!! ☺️ Couldn't resist getting these together... I like to collect pairs of books that have matching cover art. #bookhaul #new #30daysofreadathon

I treated myself to these when I was ordering books for my upcoming author readings/signings.

Tamra Really? Fascinating! 7y
Natasha.C.Barnes Also, I definitely want to see more of your collection! 7y

Nat_Reads Great pairing!! 7y
Megabooks 👍🏻👍🏻 7y
mrozzz @Tamra as former photo major I have an overly trained eye so I see it every time I go to the bookstore!! 7y
mrozzz @Natasha.C.Barnes I don't own all the pairs I make but I'll keep you in mind next time I'm rifling through my library 7y
mrozzz @Nat_Reads 🙏🏻🤓 7y
mrozzz @Booksandcooks 😊 thanks 7y
Tamra @mrozzz lol, I won't be able to "unsee" it now. 7y
Natasha.C.Barnes @mrozzz I'm definitely going to do a challenge someday about matching books for a variety of reasons--I think it's so much fun. 7y
mrozzz @Tamra a few years back the exploding flower was popular (Liane Moriarty had one) and I looked into the design credits and the same images were both bought from Getty! Which is full of stock images. Ever since I've kept an eye out. 7y
mrozzz @Natasha.C.Barnes ooooohh that would be cool!! 😎 7y
Natasha.C.Barnes @mrozzz I'm glad you like the idea! There's a lot going on now so I'm going to save it for later--maybe March would go well with Match? Book-Match March? March Book Match? 😂 I don't know. I'll float the idea to more Littens in the future. 7y
Tamra @mrozzz wow, I had no idea! 7y
emilyhaldi I don‘t blame you 😍 7y
mrozzz @Natasha.C.Barnes Yes!! And we could even match between Littens and keep it going like if I post a book that looks familiar to you, you post the match and then you could put up a new one and tag other people to scour their TBR to find a match and so on and so on 7y
mrozzz @emilyhaldi hehe that's good 😉 7y

Geek Love | Katherine Dunn
post image

If you're looking for #creepykids, the carnival has got to be your first stop, right? It's a carnivals & kiddos #bookmatch! Only Geek Love is actually creepy (The Weight of Feathers is a really sweet YA love story I enjoyed) & it's the parents who are way creepier than the kids, though they pitch in too-esp Arturo. It's a great book but definitely gets a bit gross/horrifying. I have a fairly weak stomach & I did handle it, but reader beware.

Pickpick

Perhaps #underaspell really only applies to the tagged book, but it's The Master and Margarita that provides the link in this triple #bookmatch! What to do prefer? Dancing with the devil (or similarly styled magical personage?) or big black talking dogs? M&M and JS&MN are both big and often dense but have a huge payoff. Mr. Chartwell is a fine little book-enjoyable but not all that much to write home about, I just love the dog connection.

Natasha.C.Barnes #correction!! The Master and Margarita does NOT have a giant talking dog, it has a giant talking cat, whose name is Behemoth and is definitely the best part of the book. Please forgive my error!! 7y

#lonedove people, I'm really really hoping you don't consider this too much of a spoiler!! ?

I love me a good #bookmatch! Perhaps "backwoods" is a stretch, but I think this is a nice non-horror interpretation of #backwoodsbodycount - things can go wrong out there on the road! These sagas make great #bookmates and my favorite characters from both of them are animals: the turtle and the pigs! ? Read them-you'll see. Audio of LoneDove is ??

Lacythebookworm The pigs! 🐖 😍 7y
Mdargusch I ❤️the 🐷🐷🐷and I agree, the audiobook is great. 7y
Natasha.C.Barnes @Mdargusch Im so glad someone doing #LoneDove is listening to the audio! I really love it and I think it adds to the experience. I listened 2 years ago while backpacking and it was the perfect tale for that--I was walking for every hour of that audiobook, and the pacing felt right in step. 😆 7y

Wolf in White Van | John Darnielle
post image

It's #bookmatch time! They all have similar sensibilities, which is why I chose them for #exorciseyourdemons--whether those that come of family traumas or past mistakes. Wolf in White Van and Splitfoot have a connection via journeys and imagination, while Splitfoot and Universal Harvester are connected by family issues and confusion. I love the mood of these books, but sadly I felt only WIWV followed through as much as I'd hoped. #hallowreads

MinDea I have Wolf In the White Van, but have never read it. Do you recommend it? 7y
Natasha.C.Barnes @MinDea I do! If the premise and a weird creepyish atmosphere are things you like I say go for it. I think Darnielle's writing is beautiful. It's a small sort of story and perhaps not the most amazing book in the world, but it feels like a good debut novel. I definitely liked it enough to recommend it. 7y

Natasha.C.Barnes @MinDea and if you like audiobooks, the author does a good job narrating it. 7y
Centique I loved WIWV. A completely different read for me but a great one. Never going to forget it! 😍 7y
Natasha.C.Barnes @Centique Awesome! That's how I felt about it too. 7y

The Hobbit | J.R.R. Tolkien

#fablesandfolklore #bookmates! I was going to do this #bookmatch for the #quest prompt in last month's #fallingintobooks, but I didn't have a copy of The Hobbit on hand! 😱 My mom read The Hobbit to me when I was a kid and I loved it so much--I can distinctly remember my imagination of the cave where Bilbo found the ring. I didn't read The Neverending Story till I was an adult but I was still delighted by it. #uncannyoctober #bookmate

RealLifeReading Ooh what a lovely edition of Neverending Story! Who's the publisher? 7y
RealLifeReading Oh wait I see the penguin in the corner 7y
MorbidAi Love this photo! 😍😍😍 7y
Natasha.C.Barnes @MorbidAi Thank you! I'm pretty fond of it too--I just went an stole props from my brothers' old rooms, so it came together quite quickly. You can always count on brothers for swords! 😂 7y

Beloved | Toni Morrison
post image

Lots of #shhsecrets in these #bookmates... Ok, ok, I know, bear with me-these books work great together. Both deal with death/murder, keeping secrets, and the dynamics between people-but whereas one deals with the trauma of slavery and its repercussions, the other follows rich/white/"elite" assholes who think too highly of themselves. To me, this sets them up against each other in a fascinating dialogue. #awesomeautumnbooks #readingenvyreadalong

Natasha.C.Barnes The deaths in both these books fill me with a horror full of layered realizations that hit you in the pit of your stomach, but for very different reasons. Both deal with the question of "why"....the answer to that question tends to linger in the mind for a long time for both these books. #bookmate #bookmatch 7y
DrexEdit Gosh! Terrific review! Now I want to just re-read both of these books Right. Now. 👏👏👏 7y
Natasha.C.Barnes @DrexEdit Aaaa thank you! ☺️ I've been matching a lot of books lately (with plenty saved to post in the future) but this one has to be my favorite. I'm obsessed with both of them. 7y

ReadingEnvy Oh great pairing! 7y
batsy Very interesting! I haven't read Beloved yet and I know I should. 7y
Natasha.C.Barnes @batsy It was on my "I know I should" list for so long--if I'd known how much I would love it I would have gotten to it sooner! I recommend the audiobook (read by the author!) bc the language is so much easier to understand--I picked up a copy in print and read a page and thought--"wow, this is kinda tough!" But the audio is so meditative and slow-burning in a good way. 7y
Natasha.C.Barnes To be specific, the difficulty with language is of the kind of stream-of-consciousnessy variety. It's not exactly that, but it can feel like it. Everything runs into everything else, you know? @batsy 7y
batsy @Natasha.C.Barnes I get what you mean! I don't do so well with audio books--my attention always wanders--but I'll check it out and see. Thank you! Maybe I can do a combo if I'm stalling with the print version. 7y
Natasha.C.Barnes @batsy mm, yeah, I feel you, that happens to me sometimes too. If that happens regularly it probably will for this one, given how it's written. Just wanted to save you any extra effort! Well I hope I haven't built it up as this impossible mountain--just give it a no-pressure try. 😊 7y
batsy @Natasha.C.Barnes Not at all! I like having an idea of what the book is like and seeing if my reaction is the same, or different ☺️ It's always a pleasure. 7y
