Reading Envy Podcast Episode 173: Expecting a Lot from a Book.
.
Jenny was happy to welcome Sarah Tittle in person to chat books we have read and liked recently. We found our way to a few unintentional themes of female empowerment and radicalism, with a little reader's memory lane of one Nicholson Baker.

Christine Loved your thoughts about Unfollow (I too was raised within a not-as-bad-as-Westboro-but-still-super-conservative Christian culture). I let my library hold of that slip away but now must check out again! And a bonus joy was hearing my alma mater mentioned during the episode (St. Olaf ❤️). 2d
ReadingEnvy @Christine ah, st Olaf! My sister in law also went there. 2d
Christine No way! Too fun. Wonder if we overlapped...my husband and I were there in the late 90s. 1d
ReadingEnvy @Christine oh maybe; her name would have been Heather (hmmm Peterson I think) and she graduated in 2000 I think... She was from Oregon. 1d
Christine I‘m sure our paths crossed, then (probably frequently if she was involved in choir or the Sociology or Education depts...)! I graduated in ‘99. 1d

Catsandbooks So cute!! I miss having a Guinea pig💕 1mo
Libby1 @Catsandbooks - we have 3 boars! This one is Isaac, and he‘s the friendliest of the lot. The boys don‘t get along with each other so we have to keep them separate. ☹️ When did you have piggies? 1mo
LeahBergen Aww! ❤️❤️ 1mo

Libby1 He‘s a sweetheart, @LeahBergen . He bites his brothers so they have to be kept separate, but he gives lovely kisses to make up for it. ❤️ 1mo
Catsandbooks @Libby1 I had one in high school, so about 10 years ago. Her name was Gracie and she was so sweet. I miss her dearly 💜 1mo

Home Fire: A Novel | Kamila Shamsie
Pickpick

A powerful re-telling of Sophocles' Antigone for the 21st century. The echoes in the names were obvious, some of the twists were foreseeable from knowing the play, but some decidedly were not.

Home Fire is the genre of book I can‘t get enough of. It has international intrigue. It‘s suspenseful and delivers a twist. By the end, I felt satisfied, but sad. The sex scenes are a bit over the top and unbelievable at first. The author keeps the reader puzzling over an incongruity between the protagonist‘s professed religion and her behavior. That‘s why I kept turning the pages, and scratching my head. She‘s a great storyteller. More please!
