“We are tied together in a single garment of destiny” This was a really informative & thought provoking read. Without being preachy or judgmental, author Kelsey Timmerman travels the globe to visit different factories to learn more about the people who work to produce the clothing we wear. In visiting & meeting the citizens of Bangladesh, Cambodia, China, Honduras & USA we get an insight into who & what is at stake when we purchase apparel 👇🏽

TrishB Ticked a few off there 👍🏻 3y

TheAromaofBooks So did this book give you any ideas about how to change what you purchase to make a positive impact? This always feels like one of those areas where I know I'm supporting the wrong people/businesses/systems, but don't exactly know how not to! 3y
JamieArc @TheAromaofBooks Good question. I feel the same way. 3y
Cinfhen The author highlighted one company that is doing EVERYTHING “right” SoleRebel, a footwear company from Ethiopia @JamieArc @TheAromaofBooks He also shares the idea of being both a local supporter & global consumer / so maybe buy your produce from the local farmers market ( direct from grower) as opposed to a supermarket chain that imports the produce. He explains it‘s hard to get it “right” because while we think it‘s exploitive to buy 👇🏽 (edited) 3y
Cinfhen From factories where workers are paid next to nothing/ for MOST of those workers the alternative is begging on the streets, prostitution or toiling in fields for even less pay. It‘s hard to understand just how poor some of these countries are and if we stop buying from these factories the workers are left with NO INCOME. It‘s more complicated then I imagined. It‘s a really interesting book. Very thought provoking. 3y
emilyhaldi Sounds like a great read!! 👔👗👖 3y
TheAromaofBooks That's a very interesting point about low income vs no income - I'm definitely adding this book to the list. I really enjoy books about these types of topics that are willing to admit that the situation is complicated & nuanced instead of just yelling at you about how stupid you are for not doing things the right way. 3y
Librarybelle This sounds like a must read! 3y
Cinfhen I enjoyed it @emilyhaldi it was lite learning/ part entertaining/ part educational 3y
Cinfhen Again @Librarybelle so glad for this challenge otherwise I never would have picked up this book 3y
Cinfhen I also liked his approach to start small and local @TheAromaofBooks it‘s really hard to search for the product that‘s 💯 fair trade/ for some that‘s just the conditions of the workers for others it starts with the fabric mills - it‘s pretty unending 3y
JamieArc @Cinfhen Thanks! 3y

“One person had tried to silence me and millions spoke out.”

This book was really inspiring. Listening to Malala tell her story was emotionally exhausting, but in a good way. She never said why me or life isn‘t fair but instead she focused on the positive and showed so much grace and humility. We can all learn from this young lady about perseverance and bravery. 👇🏽

Kalalalatja Great review! 3y
