I‘m a voracious mystery reader, but I‘m picky. I want strong characters, a sophisticated plot that lets me come along, and good writing. This book delivers all three. I loved it! I understand it‘s the first book in a series. I will follow Baker Somerset wherever she takes me!

My first book as an author features ex-Scotland Yard detective Baker Somerset and her two good friends. In their initial outing they must solve an international kidnapping, murder, and find the people involved in illegal activity in the military equipment industry. I'm new to Litsy and looking forward to getting to know other readers.

I read the sequel the High Road first, years ago and loved it! I have been meaning to read this book and I wasn‘t disappointed. I love all the characters deeply. It makes me want to read the High Road again. It‘s funny, lighthearted, informative and very Canadian. I read it in 2 days. Delightful book.

An early book from one of my favourite authors, Charles de Lint, a pioneer of urban fantasy. I liked the setting, Ottawa in the mid-80‘s. I lived there for a couple of summers, so many places felt familiar.

Total for the #20in4 readathon so far: 12 hours and 50 minutes. @Andrew65

Whew! @Chrissyreadit challenged me to identify my top 10 (ish) favorite sci fi / fantasy novels. Impossible. This list is my current mood, responsive. But I had to exclude books that are definitely also favorites in this genre! Like Jonathan Strange & Mr Norrell or City of Saints & Madmen or LOTR.. or others!!! 😁😁 But here are 13, anyway...

Books that are first in series are representative of the series (avail so far). 😁🌌🔮💜

You wanna play?

Avanders Oops. Edited Bc Night Film is not sci-fi / fantasy.. 😬 3y
LibrarianRyan Yeah yeah yeah. @chrissy tagged me to. I promise I will. 😜 3y
Avanders @LibrarianRyan lol 😁😁 can‘t wait! 3y

Avanders @Chrissyreadit 👏🏽👏🏽 I really hope you enjoy them 🤗 also, if you happen to do audiobooks, Nyxia is perfect for audio. 😁 3y
Chrissyreadit Oh- I‘m ordering The Fold now- it not only sounds like a book I would like it sounds like a book Owen and my friend Sytil would like. 3y
Avanders Ooh fun!! I loved that one. But ... heh, I guess I‘d say that for every book on this 😂 Hope you all like it! 🤗😘 3y

Avanders @MommyOfTwo @pogue I think some of these came from various mail book groups we‘ve been in 😁😘 @DaveGreen7777 @TheSpineView 🙌🏽😘🌌🔮 @TK421 now that you mention it... I want to, too! @SamHeartCoffee yay! 😘♥️ (and so many more to still add, right?!) @readordierachel I‘m so happy it gets some love around here! ♥️😘 3y
Avanders @BethM I *love* that book... it was my first Matt Ruff and just... 🤯🤩 But it‘s weird, apparently... at least that‘s what some people tell me 😜 On the other hand, there was rumor Margot Robbie (is that her name?) was going to produce and star in it... so I can‘t be all wrong 😜😁 3y
MommyOfTwo Nyxia was my pick for SFMBC. I still need to read the third one. 3y

Laughterhp Oh I‘ve looked at this before and wasn‘t at all surprised by the nations in my area as we have towns and other things named after them. 💚 3y

janeycanuck I‘m on the board of a local non-profit and we open all of our meetings with an acknowledgement of the land we are on. It‘s an important reminder of our history. 3y
JaclynW Fascinating. I'm on Eastern Shoshone lands and near lots of 'Ute' lands too. (Hello Utah) I would love to dig into this more. 3y

Mehso-so

I love bits of this book. The parts that follow Sara and Kiernan, Taliesin, Pudjwik, and the house are amazing. I was frustrated by the government plot and much less invested in the other characters

A cross post from instagram today - but the challenge works here too with what I had to say about it sooo... ?‍♂️

"This is an author I love to read outdoors in the summer. There's just something about Charles de Lint and outdoor reading that always feels so right."
