Their Eyes Were Watching God | Zora Neale Hurston

Pickpick

Well, this was wonderful. Extra treats hearing the names of small, rural towns in Florida that only Floridians know.

I HIGHLY suggest the audiobook. Ruby Dee is phenomenal - her ability to do dozens of different voices so different from her own floored me. So good. 1/2 extra star for her.

mom2bugnbee The writing in the passages when they were running from the hurricane was some of the best descriptive writing I've read. As someone who grew up in Florida, I felt like I was back there, huddling in the bathroom & under school desks while a hurricane rolled through. Astounding writing. 3y
MallenNC The audiobook was amazing! 3y

Oh. My. Word.

How have I gone 48 years without reading this book?!?

I recently watched the new movie w/my BFF - Rebecca is one of her all-time faves. It was good. I knew that they added to the ending, & what they did made sense cinematically. My BFF had been telling me how good the writing was for 20 years. Mercy, was she right.

How do you write such a great ghost story with no ghost?

Spoilers in comments.

mom2bugnbee In the movie, you obviously don't get all of Mrs. DeWinters' daydreams. That was the most interesting part of her character, IMO. Lily James, who is a lovely actress, was too self-composed to play that role. I now wish they'd cast a newcomer. Also, in my mind's eye, I saw Maggie Smith as Danvers. ☺ 3y

AmyG I did the same...read the book and watched the movie. Didn‘t like the movie so much but loved the book. I loved how you never see the main character. Brilliant. 3y
HOTPock3tt Those were my exact thoughts when I read it for the first time last year. My jaw literally hit the FLOOR! Why in the world did it take me so long to read such a Brilliant book!? 😱 3y
Amiable I still haven‘t read it ! It‘s on my shelves, though. Your review makes me want to go take it down right now! 3y

So.

I'm not going to star rate this one, because I didn't like it much, but that's because it simply wasn't my cup of tea. It's no reflection on Jemisin. This was my first book of hers, and it will be my last, but that TRULY is "it's not you, it's me". Her world-building & storytelling lived up to the hype. The twist caught me off guard. She deserves the awards she's won. Just not my type. But it did tick off some boxes for challenges! ??

AllisonM89 I felt the same way. I actually couldn't finish it because it was so depressing, but it was nothing short of brilliant 3y
TheAromaofBooks I slogged through the whole trilogy. I didn't exactly dislike it, but I also wasn't sorry to reach the end. Brilliant world-building & engaging characters, but relentlessly depressing & the 2nd-person narration drove me crazy 😂 3y

SW-T @mom2bugnbee @AllisonM89 @TheAromaofBooks I wasn‘t a fan of the tagged either. Tried a couple times. But fell in love with The Inheritance trilogy. Very different moods and trilogies! Broken Earth not for me, but with Inheritance I was all in. 3y
mom2bugnbee @AllisonM89 @thraromaofbooks @SW-T I pushed myself through this one (I have no problems bailing) because I wanted to finish it for challenges, & I'm glad that I did. But I won't finish the series. Good to know about her other works! I might try another. I certainly understand why she has the status that she does. Her imagination is amazing. 3y
