My Name Is Asher Lev | Chaim Potok
Pickpick

A story that was painful to read...beautifully written, emotionally believable portrayal and easily followed. A boy, born as a prodigy painter/artist into a family with no artistic understanding or any desire for it, actually repelled by it and both encouraged and discouraged in his formative years, culminating in devastation. I was raptly attentive throughout, heartbroken in many ways about his childhood and at the end. 5 stars!

The Extinguished Lights by Isaac Bashevis Singer was the final of our #holidayreads for #litereads

I found this Hanukkah ghost story to be sweet and much like a fable, a lovely read for the holidays. I also included a fun fact about one of the Yiddish names featured in the story as part of my full review (link below). Be sure to share your thoughts on this story. Our first pick for the new year will be available tomorrow

First book by Oz and I just loved it. An expressionist-epistolary novel about a wrecked marriage that hasn't ended quite yet. "He knows how to create new metaphors, new stories to describe the sorrows within a family, within a love that should have ended, but whose flame is still burning. (https://bit.ly/2SDlGoy)"

The Family Mashber | Nister, Leonard Wolf
Pickpick

Author was arrested and the last section lost.

Think it's about what loyalties we owe others. Community, family, god, oneself. Men embrace piety throwing their families into poverty. In the historical setting this means their children starve. Was that their choice to make? Which is selfish, rejecting materialism or accepting it?

Thank you so much for the blessing @Meaw_catlady You are so sweet!

1. I usually do my nails or watch one of my favorite movies. Or curl up with a good book on the couch and snuggle with my dog.
