Alice | Elizabeth Eliot
post image

A Sunday afternoon spent reading another oldie which is, happily, turning out to be darkly comic and unputdownable.

This 1949 novel has recently been republished in the Furrowed Middlebrow series by #DeanStreetPress. 👏🏻👏🏻

Melissa_J I‘m just over here admiring your teacup 😊 2mo
shawnmooney Oooh, off to check the book and its publisher out!😘 2mo
saresmoore What Shawn said! 2mo

rubyslippersreads I just bought this ebook, but yours is so much prettier. 😍 2mo
Tonton Furrowed Middlebrow !😎 2mo
batsy Lovely cover! And "darkly comic and unputdownable" is music to my ears ? 2mo
Cathythoughts I‘m stacking too ♥️👍🏻 2mo
Aimeesue After seeing this post yesterday, I looked to see if there was an ebook. There is! I'd rather have a hard copy, but alas, there's so little room on my shelves. The ebook is $3.99 in the US. 2mo
LeahBergen @Melissa_J It‘s one of my newest and in heavy rotation at the moment. 😆 2mo
LeahBergen @shawnmooney I think you‘d like some of the Furrowed Middlebrow books. 👍🏻 2mo
LeahBergen @saresmoore And I think you‘d like them, too! 😘 2mo
LeahBergen @ShyBookOwl It‘s lovely, isn‘t it? 😊 2mo
LeahBergen @rubyslippersreads @Aimeesue I really like that they offer their ebooks for a good deal when they republish these forgotten books. 👍🏻 2mo
LeahBergen @Tonton I love them (and Furrowed Middlebrow blog, too 👍🏻). 2mo
LeahBergen @batsy @Cathythoughts It‘s a strangely appealing little book (so far!) 2mo
Aimeesue "The Principal, Miss Hartley-Jones, said that she would be very pleased to have me as a pupil, and that she was sure I would be very happy with them. She mentioned that of course all her pupils were gentlewomen. I was beginning to wonder where really common people learned to type. Maybe they just picked it up for themselves." Hahahahahaha! This book is very Mitfordish. I'm enjoying it! (edited) 2mo
LeahBergen @Aimeesue It‘s a quirky one, isn‘t it? 😆 Look closely at this photo of my cover when you get to the description of Alice‘s favourite painting. It‘s almost exactly what‘s described! 2mo
Aimeesue @LeahBergen It‘s EXACTLY the painting! 2mo

Young Maud has #GoneAway to the countryside to avoid her overbearing stepmother and lands a job cataloguing the library of the the crotchety Mr. Feniston. She soon finds herself embroiled with his (younger male) relations and other villagers in this 1957 comedy of domestic life.

LeahBergen @AlaMich It does sound good, doesn‘t it? I should really read it soon. 😆 5mo
LeahBergen @britt_brooke I do, too (and I can get a bit crotchety myself every now and then 😉). 5mo
LeahBergen @Ruthiella Yes! I always love any of the “forgotten author” publishers. 😆 5mo
LeahBergen @emilyhaldi I‘m hoping I enjoy these as I bought them all for a good deal without reading the author before. 😆 Well, I DID read bits of them all before purchasing so I should be safe. 🤞🏻 Have you read any Angela Thirkell? She seems to be frequently compared to her (I‘m a Thirkell fan). 5mo
TrishB These look lovely 💕 5mo
CarolynM I'm going to have try this one and see if it's up to the Thirkell standard😀 5mo
batsy I know I said this all the time in your comments, but what a pretty cover! 😆 5mo
erzascarletbookgasm What a pretty collection! Another author I don‘t know 🙈 but I‘ll be looking her up! Are these like Frances Brody type of books? 5mo
saresmoore I just purchased one of hers in ebook form, and it was still the pretty cover that convinced me, though I won‘t be able to see it while I‘m reading. 🙃 5mo
quietjenn I really love her books! 5mo
britt_brooke @LeahBergen Yeah, me, too. 😬 5mo
emilyhaldi Nope! Haven't read Thirkell but I will be looking into her too!! 5mo
AlaMich @LeahBergen I like Thirkell too, so I should really check these out! 5mo
rubyslippersreads Sounds like a “new” author to collect. 😊 5mo
LauraBeth More than anyone else on Litsy, you‘ve introduced me to authors I‘ve never heard before ❤️ 5mo
LeahBergen @LauraBeth 😆 Is that a good thing or a bad thing? 😘😘 5mo
