Inspired by the photographs of Julia Margaret Cameron, Afterimage is a provocative, passionate, yet delicate Victorian novel. When the young Irish maid Annie Phelan arrives at the country home of Isobelle and Eldon Dashell, she is swept into a world of artistic ambitions and hidden passions. But she also discovers a marriage that has grown distant and two people who see her as a blank slate upon which to project their own desires and failed dreams. Jealousy, longing and sensuality intertwine in this mesmerizing novel of aesthetic obsession and unfulfilled dreams.

"And yet, there is something of last night here. Here. The way Isabelle looks out. The way she looks out at Annie, almost as if she loves her, almost as if she could."

There is something immensely comforting in these upside down days in returning to books I read and loved in the past. This was the book that introduced me to Helen Humphreys and her beautiful, haunting, engaging writing. The story of Annie and Eldon and Isabelle is one worth visiting (and revisiting), characters hemmed in by the expectations of their times, dreaming of lives that are more than what is possible.

Enjoying some sunshine and starting on the #DoubleSpin! This was the book that introduced me to one of my favourite authors, I first read it in a Modern Women Writers class at Uni.

Overall I enjoyed this book. Like I said in my last post the writing is sparse and beautiful. It wasn‘t an action packed story line but I found the development of the characters to be really good. I feel like the author could have gone just a touch further to make the ending a little more satisfying for the reader, but I‘m sure that leaving us hanging was kind of the point. As with a photograph, I feel like we didn‘t quite get the full story.

MrBook Great review! 6y
TheKidUpstairs I totally missed your original post that you were reading this one already! Glad you enjoyed. Humphreys visited by university lit class where I was first introduced to this book. I remember her telling us she prefers hazy endings over clean ones, because when she's reading those endings stick with her the longest. 6y
TheKidUpstairs P.S. the sparse, beautiful language and languid plot lines are definite signatures of Humphrey's work. I go to her books when I want to revel in the beauty of the words 6y

Thoroughly enjoying this book. The prose is very sparse and full of images of a childless Victorian couple and their Irish servant girl that they each hope to create their dreams in. #queerbooks #booktoteswap #catsoflitsy

Really excited to dig into this queer book from @TheKidUpstairs This quote stood out to me almost immediately! I can already tell this is gonna be great. I totally relate to that feeling of anticipation for something and the vague melancholy of reality over taking your imaginings. 💛🏳️‍🌈 #queerbooks #booktoteswap

I ❤ Helen Humphreys. Such varied, beautiful books. This was the first, a selection for a modern women's writers course in university. We were lucky enough to have her come speak to the class.

#junetunz @Cinfhen

Cinfhen How awesome that you heard the author speak! Were you an English major? 7y
TheKidUpstairs @Cinfhen it was a great experience! I was not, I was a drama major, but I took a number of English courses (and History) as electives. 7y
Cinfhen That's so cool! I wish I could redo college 🤓 7y
