The Gangs Of New York
The Gangs Of New York: An Informal History Of The Underworld | Herbert Asbury
7 posts | 2 read | 1 reading | 7 to read
Herbert Asbury presents here a vivid and startling account of New York gangdom from its beginning in Revolutionary times to comparatively recent days. Here are the stories of the great gangs which terrorized the city and at times menaced its very existencefrom the Bowery Boys and the Dead Rabbits to the Gophers and the Eastmans. Kid Dropper, Dopey Benny, Gyp the Blood and Owney Madden are a few of the gangster luminaries described, not to mention such female evildoers as Gallus Mag and Sadie the Goat. Nor have the underworlds lesser lights been overlooked; for these pages are crowded with a host of gang warriors, pickpockets, tong leaders, murderers, politicians, gamblers, prostitutes, dive-keepers and a few would-be reformers. Mr. Asbury has created such a rich, factual background for this chronicle of crime and gangsterism that the book gains considerable stature as a revealing picture of New York Citys history through a century of frenzied growth and expansion. Whether you read it as such or merely for amusement, it is a swift, exciting experience.

Since I‘m not living in Germany anymore, I always habe to stay with friends and family while I‘m visiting. Right now I‘m staying in an apartment in which they do THIS to books. I‘m pretty disappointed.

julesG Whereabouts are you? The house in the background looks familiar. Could be somewhere I know. 6y

julesG Ha, knew it. Wooden window frames and the house in the back... I haven't been for ages, though. Maybe because I hardly know anyone there anymore. Or rather I haven't met the people I know there for nearly 20 years and some have grown up to be pretty well known (like members of the German parliament). 6y

#NoteworthyNovember #criminals Ed Bunker was Mr. Blue in Reservoir Dogs, but was a career criminal from an early age ,he was 17 and the youngest to ever be an inmate in San Quentin. He started writing , stories and screenplays helped him take a new path.Education of a Felon is his amazing memoir.Gangs of New York, love the movie ,love the original book.Infamous Manhattan can be used as walking tour of crime scenes if you are so inclined.

My pick for #godzilla. Godzilla brought destruction to the streets of Tokyo, and the gangs bought destruction to the streets of New York (at least in the movie...I clearly have not cracked open the book 😕).
