A Feast for Crows (A Song of Ice and Fire, Book 4)
A Feast for Crows (A Song of Ice and Fire, Book 4) | George R. R. Martin
HBOs hit series A GAME OF THRONES is based on George R. R. Martins internationally bestselling series A SONG OF ICE AND FIRE, the greatest fantasy epic of the modern age. A FEAST FOR CROWS is the fourth volume in the series. The Lannisters are in power on the Iron Throne. The war in the Seven Kingdoms has burned itself out, but in its bitter aftermath new conflicts spark to life. The Martells of Dorne and the Starks of Winterfell seek vengeance for their dead. Euron Crows Eye, as black a pirate as ever raised a sail, returns from the smoking ruins of Valyria to claim the Iron Isles. From the icy north, where Others threaten the Wall, apprentice Maester Samwell Tarly brings a mysterious babe in arms to the Citadel. As plots, intrigue and battle threaten to engulf Westeros, victory will go to the men and women possessed of the coldest steel and the coldest hearts.

Brienne arrives in Duskendale. She gets her shield painted &stays at an inn while the paint sets,is reminded of the baths at Harrenhal, tries not to think of Jaime there.
It‘s clear Sansa is not in Duskendale. The Lord suggests Dorne, Oldtown, far away. But she think Sansa will go where she has people. To the Wall? Riverrun? The Vale? She gets some other “leads”
She realizes she is being followed by a familiar squire hoping to find Tyrion

Jaime feels the guilt of his fathers death. He hasn‘t seen Varys since helping Tyrion escape. When he went to question the undergaolers they were all killed by the Kingsguard at Cersei‘s behest.
Cersei comes to see him in The Great Sept & She pleads with him to be Hand & they can rule like King &Queen. He declines.
Still upset with her, but he gives Cersei advice on handling Mace Tyrell, but it means rushing Margaery &Tommens wedding

Roary47 I‘m not sure how I feel about this chapter. He helped his brother, yay! His dad was killed because of it, and he cared about his dad as close to the favorite. 😭 He cant question anyone because Cersei is losing it. 😡 He offers his next oldest son to be married early… really early. 🤢 20h
5feet.of.fury @Roary47 yes, he‘s a rollercoaster of emotions. Moving up the wedding scares me, this series doesn‘t have a good history with weddings 14h

At the funeral she speaks with Lancel, ill since Blackwater, she regrets sleeping with him &wonders if he had confessed to the septon -about that or Robert‘s wine
The Tyrells try for positions of power, Mace Tyrell wants to be Hand, Cersei thwarts them while keeping the alliance for now
Her Uncle, Ser Kevan will only be Hand if Cersei makes him regent &goes to Casterly Rock. She refuses &he makes threats
Qyburn wants to tend to the Mountain

Roary47 Aww there is the Cersei I love to hate. I‘m seeing her right now on a sinking ship, and she‘s in the water with weights on her ankles. 2d

Arya goes ashore in Braavos. She is intimidated &feeling like a little mouse again. She passes temples of all the gods, new, old & almost forgotten alike. She climbs the stairs of a windowless temple &t he doors are opened for her, inside it is filled with the dead & dying
In the House of Black &White, the temple of the many-faced God, she uses all her aliases before revealing her true identity. The Priest challenges her, asking if she fears death

majkia She might be feeling like a little mouse but she's adventuring far more than any other character in the books. 3d

Roary47 She is truly a tough girl. I hate Theon, but in the show maybe the book he asked Robb if he was scared. Robb admitted he was, and Theon said: “Good that means you are not stupid”. Arya might be a little girl, but she is smart and tough as nails. 3d

Jon shows Sam a letter to King Tommen & Sam has trouble keeping Bran‘s secret when Jon recalls Tommen &Bran playing with swords
They debate the War &whether Lannisters will see the Watch as traitors
Gilly had been sent to plead for Mance‘s life, which seems doomed. Gilly is being sent away & Sam with her… & Maester Aemon. They are to go to the Citadel & Sam to become the Maester, the news doesn‘t please Sam as Jon thought it would. Jon orders him.

Roary47 Yay! I caught up again! I‘m not sure how I feel about them leaving. 4d

5feet.of.fury @Roary47 @Sargar114 I think Sam & Gilly are both getting a good deal out of this! I can understand Gilly being upset about leaving the other baby, but I think it‘s useless for Sam to worry about what his family will think when he is already disapproved of.. 4d
Sargar114 @5feet.of.fury that was my thought about Sam, but then again old habits die hard I suppose. 4d
5feet.of.fury @Sargar114 true, his family has done a number on his confidence 4d
BethM Trauma is why he‘s upset. Piecing it together- he expressed wanting to be a maester and his dad chained him up in the dark for days. It‘s totally a trauma response. 4d
5feet.of.fury @BethM I didn‘t remember that! Yikes 4d

Brienne searches for Sansa
Ser Creighton offers to travel with her for her protection. She is a lady. Ser Illifer says she is accused of killing Renley. She swears on the Seven she did not harm him & they travel on peacefully
They come upon Ser Shadrich, who also searches for Sansa
Rumors circulate of how Jaime lost his hand & Brienne recalls admiringly his strength in their fight
In the morning she leaves before the others, continuing after Sansa

Cersei is awoken by guards & she is confronted by tragedy, she is appalled at the way everyone is reacting & she doesn‘t know how to react herself.
Jaime is searches the hidden tunnel, but needs to find keys to a gate where the tunnels converge. Cersei tells Jaime he must be Hand now, he rebuffs her
As her mind reels she notices Varys is absent.
Tyrion is discovered to be missing from his cell

BethM I liked Kevan‘s rebuke. 5d

Oberyn‘s children want to avenge him. Doran advises dying in trial by combat is not murder. Where Obara wants to burn Oldtown, Lady Nym wants to bring her sister Tyene & strike Tywin, the Golden Twins & the little King. Tyene has her own plan, to arrange a wedding & crown Myrcella to lure the Lannisters to Dorne

Doran requests they be locked up, their sister Sarella is not in Dorne & he just hopes she is not of the same mind

5feet.of.fury Side note- for the 1 off perspectives I‘m just taking whatever photo is on to wiki, this is Tyene from the Game of Thrones card game apparently. The recurring characters will still be the TV show 1w

I can‘t decide if Cersei is a feminist character or not. I lean toward not. I‘m not placing any moral value on her feminism. She‘s obviously a villain in this book. You could argue that her ascent to Queen Regent in a male-dominated society is the epitome of feminism. But the one nagging detail for me is her constant lament at not being born a man. Regardless, I‘m glad to be done with this slow-moving 34-hour political drama. ⭐️⭐️⭐️/5

I‘m more than a quarter through this, and I realize that GRRM has grown tired of his Westeros story. No Tyrion—except in third-person exposition. One chapter for Sansa. Two chapters for Arya. This was a book about the dullest character, Cersei Lannister—a power-hungry narcissist who somehow is more cunning and vile than her murdered father. I need more House Stark. So glad I am not trudging through a physical read.

KathyWheeler This was the most boring book in the series! As long as they are, I had no trouble reading the others; this one, however, was an absolute slog. 2y
Awk_Word_Smith @KathyWheeler And who knows if he‘ll ever finish the series? Thanks for dashing what little hope I held on to in finishing this. ARGH! 😂 2y

Ok, not really serious. 😆😜 But man, this book is such a disappointment. Where is Tyrion? Please tell me the next book is better!

Ruthiella I remember this one and A Dance With Dragons as being very slow and instead of bringing the story in, Martin kept expanding it with new characters and seemingly tangential events. But also, at that time I thought Winds of Winter would be published in a couple of years...😢 3y
KathyWheeler This was the only one of those books that bored me to tears. I finished it but I mostly didn‘t care about what happened in it. 3y
TrishB There are some very, very, very long bits….. 3y
Sparklemn @Ruthiella @KathyWheeler @TrishB I just rewatched the TV series and was looking forward to finding out how the book differed and getting more of the color behind my favorite characters that you can‘t capture on film. Not really happening. I think I‘m going to skim the rest of it 🤷‍♀️ 3y

Might get to finish this one today since I have start back in the office 😢 I‘ve been “work from home” since mid March. I‘m lucky to still have my job but I‘m not excited about the 45 min to hour commute 1 way. I‘ll be honest though it will be nice to get back to a little pre-COVID reality.

thegirlwiththelibrarybag Good luck! It‘ll take a minute to settle back into being back 😅 I did a half day shift the other day and slept for 12 hours (and I wouldn‘t call my job physically taxing) after. I think it was a combination of worrying about being on time/wearing a mask for an extended period/moving around rather than sitting at a PC/chatting to another human - 🤔 4y

I think this will be my last of the series. I don‘t like the changes in language and style that Martin has made. The first 2 books were good, the 3rd ok, and this one is just not good. The story and characters are good for the most part, but the writing is terrible. He started turning the women into nothing but objects for the men. So much rape and sexual assault and sex in general. I don‘t know why the change but it‘s not good.

BGam Absolutely I agree... this one dragged me so long... but I heard A dance with dragon is good. 4y

🌼🌼🌼 since I couldn't find the stars I m giving 3 flowers to this book. It was a slow read but not an uninteresting book. In fact I loved reading Brianna's journey and Samwell's journey to the citadel. I hated Cercie who is getting stupider and crueler because she has no one to control her, Tywin dead, Tyrion gone and Jamie being a spineless twin and in love, she is excreting cruel juice in Kings Landing.

This one is going very slow... or because my mind is more on the news regarding Covid 19

AFTER THOUGHT: Even though there were pages and pages of unnecessary past stories of unimportant lords, ladies, squires etc, which I gladly skimmed through, it was very absorbing.. I think this book should have gone faster if there was a summary after every chapter 🐵

Lesanne I had a hard time with this one too. If you can make it through, Dance With Dragons is better, IMO. Good luck! 4y
BGam @Lesanne u r right, this is going very slow! There are some parts which I m just skimming through because by now I know that they are of no use to the overall plot of the story.. 4y
