An Everlasting Meal
An Everlasting Meal: Cooking with Economy and Grace | Tamar Adler
Reviving the inspiring message of M. F. K. Fishers How to Cook a Wolf written in 1942 during wartime shortagesAn Everlasting Meal shows that cooking is the path to better eating. Through the insightful essays in An Everlasting Meal, Tamar Adler issues a rallying cry to home cooks. In chapters about boiling water, cooking eggs and beans, and summoning respectable meals from empty cupboards, Tamar weaves philosophy and instruction into approachable lessons on instinctive cooking. Tamar shows how to make the most of everything you buy, demonstrating what the worlds great chefs know: that great meals rely on the bones and peels and ends of meals before them. She explains how to smarten up simple food and gives advice for fixing dishes gone awry. She recommends turning to neglected onions, celery, and potatoes for inexpensive meals that taste full of fresh vegetables, and cooking meat and fish resourcefully. By wresting cooking from doctrine and doldrums, Tamar encourages readers to begin from wherever they are, with whatever they have. An Everlasting Meal is elegant testimony to the value of cooking and an empowering, indispensable tool for eaters today.

I'm only on page 9 and I'm in love. "Undercooking is a justifiable reaction to the 1950s tendency to cook vegetables to collapse. But the pendulum has swung too far." AMEN.

I‘ve been in love with this book since I first learned of it years ago, and I‘ve given it as a gift more than once and recommended it widely. Minor detail: I‘d never actually read it! 😆 But now that‘s fixed. Thankfully, it‘s very worthy of my advance love - just an excellent, intelligent, practical approach to home cooking and to making the most of every ingredient. And the writing = 😍! Every bit as brilliant as the content.

rachelm You grow poms!?? 5y
Christine @emz711 @rachelm Yes!! We planted our first one a couple of years ago. It‘s small but growing well...should have about a dozen fruits this year. 5y
emz711 @Christine wow where do they grow? 5y
Christine @emz711 I‘m not sure about their range, but quite a few are grown in California these days (I live in San Diego). 5y

Oh, how I love taking my car to the (located-two-blocks-from-the-beach) mechanic. 🌊📚☀️

ljuliel Wow. You live in paradise. That‘d be my goal, to live that close to the beach. 5y
Sace Beautiful! 5y
Christine @ljuliel @RestlessFickleBookHoarder - It really is beautiful. I rarely give myself permission to just go down to the beach with a book; it takes being stranded without a vehicle to get me to do it! I should change that. 5y

I haven‘t eaten yet this morning and I just read the chapter on bread, and more specifically bread toppings & soups. Good grief I‘m hungry now!

Trying to follow my mug‘s instructions on this foggy and temporarily quiet Sunday morning. And FINALLY digging into this book, which has been on my TBR and bookshelf for years.

Tamra Love your mug! 🍁🍂 5y
Tamra This sounds good - I really enjoyed Fisher‘s essays. 5y
Christine @Tamra Thanks! And yes, I‘ve heard so many good things about this, and Fisher‘s The Art of Eating is another book that‘s been on my TBR/bookshelf forever (and I know I will love)! (edited) 5y

There is no single "cookbook" that has been more influential in empowering me to embrace and enjoy the process of making food than this one. A book I read/re-read constantly and one I press into everyone's hands (well, a second copy - keep your paws off mine!)

I started this ages ago, flew through it, and then set it down in the last chapter, not wanting it to end. I finally did finish it and what a treat. Adler has had me craving olives for months now. She writes about the simplest of food with sensual elegance. A wonderful read that I'm sure I'll come back to over and over. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

#Allisnotlost @Liberty Since I started my job as teen librarian, I've been terribly absent from Litsy. Now that I'm checking books out at work instead of buying as many, I end up returning the book before I've posted! 😭 But I see that cat stickers are a thing now... How can I pass up the opportunity to shrink and hide cat stickers? Also, this book is lovely. A medication on cooking resourcefully. ❤❤

SuperPunkNinja This book is amazing! 7y
April @McShelfington I love it! But I keep stopping to go raid my fridge--she's so full of ideas! 7y
SuperPunkNinja @April Yes, it's definitely changed the way I cook for the better! 7y

Day26 #SeasonsReadings2016 #bookishgifts I did not get many bookish gifts this year but I was happy to get these two foodie books from a good friend who shares my love of cooking. Perfect as I had to return "Kitchens of the Great Midwest" to the library unread a couple of months ago and it has been checked out ever since and I have also been wanting to read "An Everlasting Meal." #foodiebooks

Lacythebookworm I really enjoyed Kitchens of the Great Midwest! 📚😊 7y
