10 posts | 19 read | 9 to read
NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER From Academy Award winner and bestselling author Diane Keaton comes a candid, hilarious, and deeply affecting look at beauty, aging, and the importance of staying true to yourselfno matter what anyone else thinks. Diane Keaton has spent a lifetime coloring outside the lines of the conventional notion of beauty. In Lets Just Say It Wasnt Pretty, she shares the wisdom shes accumulated through the years as a mother, daughter, actress, artist, and international style icon. This is a book only Diane Keaton could writea smart and funny chronicle of the ups and downs of living and working in a world obsessed with beauty. In her one-of-a-kind voice, Keaton offers up a message of empowerment for anyone whos ever dreamed of kicking back against the shoulds and supposed tos that undermine our pursuit of beauty in all its forms. From a mortifying encounter with a makeup artist who tells her she needs to get her eyes fixed to an awkward excursion to Victorias Secret with her teenage daughter, Keaton shares funny and not-so-funny moments from her life in and out of the public eye. For Diane Keaton, being beautiful starts with being true to who you are, and in this book she also offers self-knowing commentary on the bold personal choices shes made through the years: the wide-brimmed hats, outrageous shoes, and all-weather turtlenecks that have made her an inspiration to anyone who cherishes truly individual styleand catnip to paparazzi worldwide. She recounts her experiences with the many men in her lifeincluding Warren Beatty, Jack Nicholson, Al Pacino, and Sam Shepardshows how our ideals of beauty change as we age, and explains why a life well lived may be the most beautiful thing of all. Wryly observant and as fiercely original as Diane Keaton herself, Lets Just Say It Wasnt Pretty is a head-turner of a book that holds up a mirror to our beauty obsessionsand encourages us to like what we see. I‘m listening to audio books in my car. It‘s an assortment as I‘m getting them for $2 from our discard library shop. Loved this one as I‘m a fan of hers, she is reading this , and she is a similar age to me. Funny at times and very reassuring that I‘m not the only daft older woman. A great listen.

UwannaPublishme @MaleficentBookDragon 😁I keep hearing that the book is so much scarier than the movie. 4y
MaleficentBookDragon @UwannaPublishme Oh it is. I read it as a kid (big mistake; I didn't go into my POOL for weeks) and I occasionally still think about it and shiver.

UwannaPublishme Oh my! Then I hope it comes up on the #BookSpin after the summer. 😱 I remember seeing the movie on July 4th weekend when it first opened. I don‘t think I swam at all that summer! 😆 4y
PurpleyPumpkin Wow, what a great tbr! So many good books out there. Sadly, I haven‘t been able to spend much time reading or enjoying Litsy lately. Life has been challenging. Glad to see that you‘re doing both!🙌🏽 4y
UwannaPublishme @PurpleyPumpkin Hey my friend! Nice to hear from you, but sorry you‘ve been having some challenges. Wishing you calmer days ahead and more reading time. I‘m really trying to focus on this TBR pile, but there are always temptations here on Litsy. Be well and hang in there! 🤗❤️ 4y

So not really a book review but book related. This movie was great! I absolutely loved it, such a feel good movie. Andy Garcia and Diane Keaton are so great together. I'm jealous of their book club!

I am a little embarrassed to admit that I listened to this, and even more embarrassed that I enjoyed it. I was in the middle of some heavy books and needed something lite to fill in the gaps. Keaton, who reads with a touching vulnerability, mixes humorous anecdotes with moving moments from real life. A surprisingly personal look into the life of a real person who is also a celebrity. She is open about her flaws, her mistakes & her insecurities.

Joshcopeland No typos! Lol...just got a good laugh out of the caption 7y

Imagine having brunch with Diane Keaton during which she shares Hollywood stories and other scattered musings. Some bits are interesting. Other bits leave you discreetly playing on your phone. It's a fun brunch. Now imagine reading a transcript of that lunch. Not as fun. This was scattered, self-indulgent, occasionally cute. I think she was trying to explore the beauty of life's ups and downs, but she lost focus. Not the worst book. Not the best.

I failed to plan ahead and select audiobooks for my road trip in advance. I ended up having to pick fro. what the library had on hand the day before I left. I listened to Why Not Me by Mindy Kaling in the way there and decided on this for the drive home. I didn't quite finish it on the drive. So far it's just OK. Diane Keaton can be pretty funny, but this feels disjointed.
