A Girl from Yamhill
A Girl from Yamhill: A Memoir | Beverly Cleary
19 posts | 18 read | 27 to read
Told in her own words, A Girl from Yamhill is Newbery Medalwinning author Beverly Clearys heartfelt and relatable memoirnow with a beautifully redesigned cover! Generations of children have read Beverly Clearys books. From Ramona Quimby to Henry Huggins, Ralph S. Mouse to Ellen Tebbits, she has created an evergreen body of work based on the humorous tales and heartfelt anxieties of middle graders. But in A Girl from Yamhill, Beverly Cleary tells a more personal storyher storyof what adolescence was like. In warm but honest detail, Beverly describes life in Oregon during the Great Depression, including her difficulties in learning to read, and offers a slew of anecdotes that were, perhaps, the inspiration for some of her beloved stories. For everyone who has enjoyed the pranks and schemes, embarrassing moments, and all of the other poignant and colorful images of childhood brought to life in Beverly Clearys books, here is the fascinating true story of the remarkable woman who created them.

So fun to learn about Beverly‘s childhood and teen years. Echoes of Ramona and The Luckiest Girl.

mandarchy I was really impressed when I read this. Amazing pioneer history I wasn't expecting. And the simple way that got her started writing. 3y
Caryl @mandarchy — Yes! I love how she started with her family‘s history, because those echoes affected her parents and her life. And I appreciated the perspective of a young person living through the Great Depression. 3y

In honor of Beverly Cleary today I'm reposting my recommendation that you read one or both of her autobiographies. I read them both in 2019. Such an interesting lady! And the skills that made her characters seem real are on full display here as she recalls a multitude of details about her childhood and young adulthood.

Getting in a wee bit of reading outside while the light is still good.

VictoriaLegend This woman single-handedly helped to shape my childhood. I had no idea that she had a memoir, though. Thank you for this post! 4y
quietjenn @VictoriaLegend She has two actually! This one covers her childhood and the other (My Own Two Feet) deals with her as an adult, becoming a librarian and then author. I read that one a while ago, but will probably revisit it after this. I'm like you and she was so very instrumental to my childhood. I just adore her and am glad to share the love. 4y
Pageturner1 loved her books growing up. will have to read about her. 4y
VictoriaLegend @quietjenn That's wonderful. Thank you for the information. I will definitely add these two titles to my TR list. Happy reading! 4y

Perfect morning to finish my first April #BookSpin read—It‘s Beverly Cleary‘s 104th Birthday! I guess her secrets for living a long & happy life are: have a sense of humor, share your love of reading and writing with everyone you can and always be surrounded by great books. The relationship between Beverly and her mother was very sad for me, but it was interesting to learn about the early life of my favorite childhood author and what it was like for her during the Depression. #AtoZLitsy (Letter G)

Day 6: “Father brought home two books required for the first grade, The Beacon Primer and The Beacon First Reader, which cost fifty-two cents apiece. These businesslike books, with the dark #greencover (s) lettered in black, were thin and easy to hold. I buried my face in the pages, inhaling the new book smell, eager to join other children in reading them.” #MagnificentMarch

When Beverly Cleary turned 103 last month, I discovered she had written, not one, but two memoirs. I finished A Girl from Yamhill and have just started My Own Two Feet. I recommend either of these books; the first covers up to when she left home for college and the second starts with her college years. I loved Beverly Cleary‘s books when I was younger. I‘m enjoying this chance to reconnect with her as an adult!

Happy 101st birthday Beverly Cleary!

I live in Beverly Cleary country (Yamhill county, Oregon) and her books were an integral part of my childhood. I didn't read her memoir until I was a grown up though, and I loved it.

ReadingEnvy My parents are both from Yamhill County, Mom's from Newberg, Dad's from Yamhill. And I got my undergrad degree in Yamhill County! You probably run across my cousins all the time. ;) 7y
BookInMyHands @ReadingEnvy I'm in Newberg too! Small world. 7y
ReadingEnvy @BookInMyHands awesome...I grew up over chehalem mtn (219) just over the line into Washington county. Have a scone at Coffee Cottage for me! ;( 7y

I read all of Beverly Cleary as a kid. I discovered her memoir much later as an adult and fell in love with her all over again.

BookInMyHands I live in Yamhill County- just down the road from Yamhill and McMinnville! We had big celebrations around here last year when Cleary turned 100. Did you see the PBS special on her? It was great and my kids liked it too. I love both these stories, good pairing! 7y
angrylilasian @BookInMyHands I did not see the PBS special! I'll have to look for it! I can't wait for my kids to read her books. 7y
Arbol There was a book published this year on walking the neighborhood where her books are set. Began as a kickstarter. It's really great, my only criticism is that the print quality is poor which doesn't help the old b & w pictures. But it IS a delightful excursion. I'll post a pics of the sculpture garden next time I'm there. 7y
angrylilasian @Arbol I love that! And I love Portland. I've only visited once but I was so happy because all I did was eat, drink coffee, and visit bookstores. 😄 7y
