pickThis was a sweet Jane-Austen-inspired graphic novel with a queer/trans twist. I loved the characters and the artwork, and really appreciated the way the book acknowledges the reality of queer and BIPOC experiences in the Regency era, yet still maintains a delightfully lighthearted tone—with humor and a sweet romance. The historical notes at the end give great context and really ground the story in its Regency-era setting.
pickA queer retelling of Emma with a Bridgerton flair and solid historical references (Dido Belle, Anne Lister). Ellie is very close to her neighbor Georgiana (who prefers to dress in a masculine style and is known as George). We also look at her cousin Charlotte and how differently she is treated due to her mixed race heritage.
I enjoyed this, the fashions, the depictions of beautiful historical spaces (Vauxhall Gardens and Temple of the Muses).
pickNon-traditional mostly Emma retelling with a little bit of Pride and Prejudice thrown in. Library Hold that came in. There's a Wait List for it so I went ahead and read. This graphic novel was gorgeous! I truly believe that Jane Austen is for everyone and this showed that. I appreciated that it gave historical context at the end. 🎩

Attractive, expressive art is the highlight of this Regency romance graphic novel. The characters really come to life and I especially love how George, a trans man, is drawn, always completely himself even when forced to wear a skirt. (There's a wonderful section at the end in which the characters themselves explain the historical basis for the black and queer characters in the story.) cont.

I need more from Hari Conner after reading this. First off, the art is fantastic. It is cute and immediately eye-catching, with an amazing use of color, but what truly stands out is the artist's use of expression. You can immediately tell what the characters are thinking and feeling, and so many panels I wanted to share with my friends due to relatability.⬇️
The expressions on Charlotte in these panels made me snort. We've all had those two friends that we were clearly aware were flirting even if they aren't. 😅😅
