Something in the Woods Loves You
Something in the Woods Loves You | Jarod K. Anderson
8 posts | 3 read | 15 to read
An inspiring blend of nature writing and memoir that explores natures crucial role in our emotional and mental health Bats can hear shapes, plants can eat light, and bees can dance maps. When his life took him to a painfully dark place, the poet behind The CryptoNaturalist, Jarod K. Anderson, found comfort and redemption in these facts and the shift in perspective that comes from paying a new kind of attention to nature. Something in the Woods Loves You tells the story of the darkest stretch of a young persons life, and how deliberate and meditative encounters with plants and animals helped him see the light at every turn. Ranging from optimistic contemplations of mortality to appreciations of a single mushroom, Anderson has written a lyrical love letter to the natural world and given us the tools to see it all anew. I keep thinking, “I‘m going to have to figure out a way to explain myself!” because all of my most trusted Litsy friends told me I‘d love this and…I‘m finding it a bit of a slog. I don‘t know what the deal is, pals!

I need to return it because it‘s way overdue. Will put it on hold and try it anew when it returns to me. It‘s entirely possible that I‘m just burnt out with work and unable to lend it my quiet focus.

*Gorgeous* cover art.

monalyisha I made it through Winter & Spring. There are scant few copies in my system but I‘m determined to get to Summer while we‘re still experiencing the dog days. 🐶🌞 2mo
JamieArc Aw that‘s okay! I actually read it over a long period of time, so that may have helped me. 2mo
monalyisha @JamieArc It does seem suited to a slower pace. 🐌 2mo
Chelsea.Poole Maybe the expectation is too high…? Happens to me. Or maybe just doesn‘t fit for you and that‘s fine! 2mo

Happened upon a literary festival in Lewisburg, WV. The board was completely covered the day before this. I was able to write a selection in the second slot (tagged).
Love this!

I'm trying not to spam your feeds with quotes from this one, but some are just too much not to share.

I am two essays/stories into this collection and I just pre-ordered a paperback copy because I just know I'm going to want to revisit this on the regular. I'm reading it through Libby and my fingers are itching to underline and annotate. It's beautiful. Thanks for bringing it to our attention @JamieArc and for seconding that with your review @Chelsea.Poole

JamieArc Love seeing this! I don‘t annotate/highlight in books very often anymore but I did in this one, and have gone back to see what I noted. @monalyisha Another nudge for you to read this one 😁 (Unless for some reason you already have and I just forgot??) 3mo
TheKidUpstairs @JamieArc I don't usually do it, either, unless I'm hosting a discussion on the book or back when I had to write essays and the such. But there are just so many lines and sections that I have been reading two or three times before continuing. It just begs remembrance. 3mo
monalyisha @JamieArc @TheKidUpstairs You didn‘t forget, Jamie! I haven‘t read it…yet. But it IS waiting on hold for me at work. 😉 The essay collection I‘m currently reading is not fast-going! 3mo
Chelsea.Poole This one truly is special. ✨ So happy it‘s reached you too @TheKidUpstairs and looks like @monalyisha soon. 3mo

Soulful and raw, wise and whimsical, Something in the Woods Loves You is a memoir of severe depression, therapy and recovery, and the transformative power of our relationship with nature—a living invitation of kinship with and inspiration from the world around us. A new all-time favorite, full of passages I underlined to return to in times of need—highly recommended for fans of Mary Oliver!

Chelsea.Poole Fantastic review! I recently read and adored this as well 🤍 3mo
underground_bks @Chelsea.Poole thank you! It‘s hard to do it justice!! 3mo

Yes, yes it does. And I love this book. A favorite read this year, and of all time. Mental illness and potentially triggering but my oh my did I love these words. So many passages to highlight throughout.

Nature is healing. 🤍
Highly recommended.

squirrelbrain Sounds wonderful - stacking! And I love your flowers - are they echinaceas/ coneflowers? 3mo
JamieArc I‘m so glad you read this and posted it. I loved it as well. I almost never reread books, but this one is worth returning to. @squirrelbrain I hope you do read this book. If I remember, one of the chapters revolves around squirrels 😊 3mo

Chelsea.Poole @squirrelbrain yes! Coneflowers—they are absolutely taking over my back garden. Which is a good thing, mostly. 😊 And yes! There‘s a chapter on squirrels, one of the many sections set 30 minutes from home, at the university where my husband works which made me love it that much more. I could go on and on about this book! @JamieArc same here, I never reread but this is one I‘d like to own to revisit often. It‘s life affirming. 3mo
TheKidUpstairs I've got this one on hold at the library, I think it's almost my turn! Pretty sure it was @JamieArc 's suggestion that made me put it on hold, glad to hear your love it too! 3mo
JamieArc @TheKidUpstairs I‘m pretty sure I mentioned it in our email chain because I thought @monalyisha would really appreciate it. I‘ll look forward to seeing what you think too, Megan 😊 3mo

1. Yes, I put them in the mail this morning. Only because I couldn‘t stand writing a check to the federal government. I literally shed a few tears thinking about where my money was going and where it wasn‘t.
