The Case Against Satan | Ray Russell
13 posts | 9 read | 36 to read
Before The Exorcist and Rosemarys Baby, there was The Case Against Satan By the twentieth century, the exorcism had all but vanished, wiped out by modern science and psychology. But Ray Russellpraised by Stephen King and Guillermo del Toro as a sophisticated practitioner of Gothic fictionresurrected the ritual with his classic 1962 horror novel, The Case Against Satan, giving new rise to the exorcism on page, screen, and even in real life. Teenager Susan Garth was a clean-talking sweet little girl of high school age before she started having fitsa sudden aversion to churches and a newfound fondness for vulgarity. Then one night, she strips in front of the parish priest and sinks her nails into his throat. If not madness, then the answer must be demonic possession. To vanquish the Devil, Bishop Crimmings recruits Father Gregory Sargent, a younger priest with a taste for modern ideas and brandy. As the two men fight not just the darkness tormenting Susan but also one another, a soul-chilling revelation lurks in the shadowsone that knows that the darkest evil goes by many names. Happy Caturday! Bruce Wayne isn‘t the least bit interested in a theological discussion, but he did cuddle with me while reading this one. A very short but very thought provoking book about possession that was the precursor to The Exorcist.

Leftcoastzen Handsome kitty!😻 4y
FlowerFairy @Leftcoastzen Thank you! He often enjoys sitting and gazing upon the handsome young man in the mirror. 🤣 4y

Great read. Be warned, there is a twist towards the end.

I‘ve not read this one, but it sounds like a watered down version of The Exorcist (although this one came first).

How amazing is this cover?!

vivastory I love this cover. I've read it & it is a bit of a watered down version of The Exorcist, but still worth reading. I'd also recommend 5y
Cinfhen Cool cover 5y
PirateJenny I love this book and cover so much. I do think it's important to remember it came first and feels watered down to us because of how explicit The Exorcist is. Original time of publication is everything. Also, read the author's note at the end 😊 5y
readordierachel I can't look at it too long. I feel like it'll steal my soul 😆 5y

🎶I don't know what it is that you've done to me
But it's caused me to act in such a crazy way...
I lose all control and something takes over me...
It's not a phase, I want you to stay with me...🎶
Love song? Or serenade to a demon? 🤔 Either way, someone's feeling a little #weak

An exorcism presents the opportunity for a look at faith and small-town America around 1960. This is positioned as a horror classic, but it‘s not too scary...nothing like The Exorcist.

vivastory I enjoyed this one. Love the cover art! 6y

My resolution to buy less books lasted exactly one day. Although, in my defense, I did check the library first & they didn't carry any of them.

LeahBergen It's that damned Penguin covers book! 😂 7y
vivastory @LeahBergen It is! All 3 purchases were books in there. At least penguin books are generally very affordable 7y
Zelma 😂 well. At least we can all support and understand. 👍 7y

vivastory @zelma I can always count on Litsy to appease my book buying guilt 7y
saresmoore I hate it when the library doesn't have a book (or three)! Maybe we should start a #LitsyLending program. But then, since we all have the same love of books, we might be loathe to part with our own precious purchases! 7y
sprainedbrain That was an impressive stretch of abstaining. 😂 7y
vivastory @saresmoore Yeah, I don't imagine too many people would be willing to part with their books. Unless some form of collateral was offered. Or a soul. 7y
vivastory @sprainedbrain I feel like I should reward myself by buying books for meeting my resolution... for a day. 7y
sprainedbrain @vivastory I think that's an excellent plan! 7y

Just a reminder, this came out in 1962. The Exorcist would be a decade later! Although we now have seen or read exorcism books, this was an original for the time and think how shocking it must have been. I felt it still held up, although the part about priest who rape was a bit cringe worthy, especially knowing what we know now. The story seems cliche for the genre, but keep in mind this was the original. Orig. cover pictured.

Trying to participate in the #readathon, but I also work weekends, so I am cheating a bit and banging out smaller books. Next up is this one. "Have you ever done an exorcism?" is a question I am asked regularly. It always surprises me, but I answer honestly-"no, nor do I know any pastors who have, but many of us have helped people face the demons that control them."

So there's an old priest and a young priest...

Before The Exorcist there was a much more subtle story of possession. I have a hard time saying too much about this because I don't want to give anything away. I loved it.
