The Tudors: A Very Short Introduction | John Guy
7 posts | 3 read | 2 to read
First published as part of the best-selling The Oxford Illustrated History of Britain, John Guy's Very Short Introduction to The Tudors is the most authoritative short introduction to this age in British history. It offers a compelling account of the political, religious and economic changes of the country under such leading monarchs as Henry VIII and Elizabeth I.The work has been substantially revised and updated for this edition. In particular, the reigns of Henry VII, Edward VI, and Philip and Mary are comprehensively reassessed.

A very useful and informative refresher on Tudor history. It's not quite accurate to describe it as a "refresher"; there was a heck of a lot of information here that I didn't know before. I was most surprised to find out that Elizabeth I was actually not all that powerful and was largely controlled and manipulated by her male advisers.

Verity John Guy is such a great historian. His Tudor England helped me get through A Level. If you're interested in Tudors - and Elizabeth- David Starkey's Elizabeth has another perspective. (I can't remember how far he agrees with Guy) 7y

This book, however accurate it might end up to be, certainly debunks the notion that Elizabeth I was all that powerful or all that in control of her henchmen.

JoeStalksBeck That was a messed up family though I adore Catherine of Aragon 8y
shawnmooney @Book_Addict Oh really? All I know about her was from Hilary Mantel, who portrayed her as anything but adorable. 8y
TheNextBook I really enjoyed the Tudor historical fiction series by Philippa Gregory. I started with the second book in the series and devoured them all. 8y

After admiring this series of dozens and dozens of colorful, short little books in various bookstores, I finally took the plunge and picked up this one yesterday. I'm starting with this one because I'll read the second volume in Hilary Mantel's Henry VIII trilogy soon. Perhaps I won't need to Google every second page if I soak up this backgrounder first. At 5 pp./day, I can read this in a month; the first five pages were surprisingly gripping!

LeahBergen Oh, those Tudors! I love them so. And I adored Wolf Hall and Bring Up the Bodies 😍 8y
MrBook I love this series of books! I have a dozen or so of them! 😁👍🏻 8y
shawnmooney @LeahBergen I'm totally stoked to begin Breaking Up the Bodies! Hey, are you aware of an unabridged audio version for it? All I've been able to locate is an abridged audio version on Scribd. 8y

shawnmooney @MrBook I think I'm going to love them too! I'm going to alternate choosing titles that naturally jump out at me – the kind of books I'm always into, like history and literature – with more discomfiting, challenging topics like science, etc. Surely, it's not too late to become a Renaissance man? :-) 8y
LeahBergen No, I haven't heard of one 😟 8y
MrBook Never too late! 😁👏🏻🙌🏻! 8y
