In the much-anticipated follow-up to the bestselling and beloved The Travelling Cat Chronicles, seven cats weave their way through their owners lives, climbing, comforting, nestling, and sometimes just tripping everyone up in this uplifting collection of tales by international bestselling author Hiro Arikawa. Against the backdrop of changing seasons in Japan, we meet Spin, a kitten rescued from the recycling bin, whose playful nature and simple needs teach an anxious father how to parent his own human baby; a colony of wild cats on a popular holiday island show a young boy not to stand in natures way; a family is perplexed by their cats undying devotion to their charismatic but uncaring father; a woman curses how her cat will not stop visiting her at night; and an elderly cat hatches a plan to pass into the next world as a spirit so that he and his owner may be in each others lives forever. Bursting with love and warmth, The Goodbye Cat exquisitely explores the cycle of life, from birth to deathas each of the seven stories explores how, in different ways, the steadiness and devotion of a well-loved cat never lets us down. A huge bestseller in Japan, this magical book is a joyous celebration of the wondrousness of cats and why we choose to share our lives with them.

If the title doesn't warn you, bring out the tissues 🥹 Our bookclub loved the Travelling Cat Chronicles and decided to read this book of short stories by the same author. It was nice to visit with a few cats and their families, including some familiar faces. The POV switched between cats & humans and each story had a unique premise

I totally wept over the title story while Casey slept on beside me, oblivious to my FEELINGS. Pets, man.

Ruthiella Well, it was about a cat…maybe Casey didn‘t quite empathize as a result. (edited) 3mo
xicanti @Ruthiella but Casey‘s normally such a big fan of cats. Mornings, on the other hand… 3mo

I came close to DISASTER yesterday when I realized at almost the last minute that I had to pick up my library holds by the 25th, not the 26th like I thought. Good thing they‘re open until 8pm on Thursdays.

I‘m especially excited for the tagged book. THE TRAVELLING CAT CHRONICLES was one of my faves a few years back and I can‘t wait to see what Arikawa does with short fiction.

A collection of heart-warming cat-related tales from the author of The Travelling Cat Chronicles. The first story made me blub. Two of the stories feature Satoru, the main human character in Chronicles, ones prequel, the other a sequel. Based on the last sentence, I think Satoru‘s, and his cat Nana‘s, story, will feature further in another book. Which, of course, I will read!

Book #5 of #ReadAway2024
Book #1 #JoyousJanuary

All the feels! OMG I truly loved this book and yes, there are moments of sadness but at the same time it's truly a heart warming book if that makes sense. #bookspin @TheAromaofBooks

Not sure starting out the week with a sad-ish book is a good idea, but here goes.

This book of short stories was as heartwarming & sad as Arikawa's The Traveling Cat Chronicles. I shed a tear at the title story, and was pleasantly surprised that several stories were about Satoru and Nana from TTCC, though in 'alternate history' versions, which was interesting. Love & bereavement are again main themes.
There's a suggestion that a third book of cat stories may be in the offing: well, if you've got a winning formula, why not? 😺

mackelie I want to get this one for my friend! So, helpful review! 5mo
Bookwomble @mackelie Thank you 😊 If your friend liked TTCC, they'll almost certainly like this one too, I think. 5mo
mackelie @Bookwomble not sure if she has read it but she likes cats and Japanese fiction so it will be a gift 😃 (edited) 5mo
mackelie You don‘t need to have read the previous ones? Right? @Bookwomble 5mo
Bookwomble @mackelie Ah, well, you don't *need* to, but I think you would definitely enjoy the stories featuring Satoru and Nana much more if you've read the tagged first. If your friend hasn't read TTCC, I'd recommend getting them that one rather than this one 😊 5mo

I thought I'd read something a bit lighter to refresh my reading palate, and these seven stories about cats by the author of The Traveling Cat Chronicle seemed to fit the bill.
Then I remembered how much I cried at the end of that book, so now I'm not sure that all seven of these cats are making it! Hold my hand, someone! 🐈‍⬛😿😭🫱🏻
