The Cleaner of Chartres
The Cleaner of Chartres: A Novel | Salley Vickers
15 posts | 9 read | 8 to read
If you enjoy the work of Marilynne Robinson, Penelope Fitzgerald, James Salteryou should be reading Vickers. Michael Dirda, The Washington Post Book World There is something very special about Agns Morel. A quiet presence in the small French town of Chartres, she can usually be found cleaning the famed medieval cathedral or doing odd jobs for the townspeople. No one knows where she came from or why. Not diffident Abb Paul, nor lonely Professor Jones, nor even Alain Fleury, whose attention she catches with her tawny eyes. She has transformed all their lives in her own subtle way, yet no one suspects the dark secret Agns is hiding. Then an accidental encounter dredges up the specter of her past, and the nasty meddling of town gossips forces Agns to confront her tragic history and the violent act that haunts it.

I am posting one book per day from my extensive to-be-read collection. No description and providing no reason for wanting to read it, I just do. Some will be old, some will be new. Don‘t judge me - I have a lot of books. Join in if you want!

I bought this book last year in Paris at #TheRedWheelbarrow bookstore from Penelope, the proprietor. Today, we actually saw Chartes itself!
(the book was great!)
Snap- had to cut off the bottom!

Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks Beautiful 😍 7mo
tpixie @Alwaysbeenaloverofbooks yes! I was so excited that it just happened to be on the way from Mont St Michel to Versailles! It also happened to have a beautiful light show on its facade at night. Chartres the town was gorgeous. My son was excited that we also stopped at Le Mans and saw the Race Museum prior. A Day of Surprises! (edited) 7mo

I hope to finish up this book today. It‘s one of the 4 books I bought in Paris. I‘ve been home sick this week, hopefully my headache allows me to read today.

tpixie @Ann_Reads thanks so much 🌺 1y
tpixie @MaureenMc I enjoyed the story and the characters. It was bittersweet but hopeful. The humor was subtle. It was a nice change, reading what I would consider literary fiction 💙 I enjoyed learning about Notre Dame de Chartres. (edited) 1y

JamieArc Agnes is one of my favorite French names. I would love to name a daughter it, but the English pronunciation is….not great 😂 1y

Enjoying this charming book. I bought it in Paris, at the suggestion of Penelope, the owner of The Red Wheelbarrow Bookstore. Penelope & the bookstore were a highlight of my trip!

I‘m so excited I made it to The Red Wheelbarrow Bookstore!
I heard about it on the podcast #TheEarfulTower. Penelope, the bookstore owner, was charming and urged me to buy a book it‘s not published in America yet! (A Jewish Girl In Paris). Luckily, my son is with me to help me carry the books around Paris today! 🤩 And now these treasures are coming home with me!

Postal book club for the win, once again.

I likely would never have read this book without our book club, and I would have missed out on a fascinating story, excellent writing, and memorable characters. Loved the gorgeous French setting, and I‘ve now spent a bunch of time looking up history and images of the cathedral in Chartres. 😍

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

tpixie I‘m so glad to hear you liked this. I‘m in Paris now and just bought this at the red wheelbarrow bookstore! It caught my eye right away! 2y

I'm quite enjoying this book but every so often Sally Vickers writes a flurry of unnecessarily obscure words for very simple concepts in a way I find irritating.
