Beautifully and hauntingly written, "After Disasters" is told through the eyes of four people in the wake of a life-shattering earthquake in India. An intricate story of love and loss weaves together the emotional and intimate narratives of Ted, a pharmaceutical salesman turned member of the Disaster Assistance Response Team; his colleague Piotr, who still carries with him the scars of the Bosnia conflict; Andy, a young firefighter eager to prove his worth; and Dev, a doctor on the ground racing against time and dwindling resources. Through time and place, hope and tragedy, love and lust, these four men put their lives at risk in a country where danger lurks everywhere.O. Henry Prize winning author Viet Dinh takes us on a moving and evocative journey through an India set with smoky funeral pyres, winding rivers that hold prayers and the deceased, and the rubble of Gujarat, a crumbling place wavering between life and death. As the four men fight to impose order on an increasingly chaotic city, where looting and threats of violence become more severe, they realize the first lives they save might be their own."

The lives of four disaster relief volunteers intersect after an earthquake in India. Not an easy read but I found it beautiful and haunting.

Viet Dinh is talking about how in some ways the short stories around four different narrators came together. He is an author who plans out the narrative and the structure before getting started. Very interesting discussion among the three authors.

Good night, Littens. I hope you are reading something wonderful. I know it's hard to concentrate with all the awfulness going on in the world. And if you can't read right now, that's okay, too. Take your time. You do what you need to do. We're all here for one another. 💕📚😘

SuperPunkNinja Thank you! 💕💕💕 7y
TheNextBook I'm finally falling back into a groove and Litsy and my friends here have been a huge and much needed support system. 7y
Gayan I really needed something funny so I am reading 7y

MyNamesParadise Liane Moriarty got me through my reading slump! Had to give the psychological thrillers a break! 7y
Ericmanciniwriter Kent Haruf got me past my post-election slump 7y
Theresa I'm giving myself until November 30 to get out of this slump. On December 1 I need to get over my damn self & get back to normal. I would like to think it won't take that long but I'm spending this entire week with family, every second of which I love, but which means almost zero time for reading. Lots of time wine shopping, though (4 tastings in 4 days) which is almost as good!! 😄🍷😁🍷 7y
LisaJo @eamann Kent Haruf!!!!! All the feels. 7y
Carol I think when this comes out tomorrow I'll be back in the saddle. It's been a bad month (even before the election) 7y

djh I have really been unfocused and just very sad... and angry. It is so difficult to concentrate on the good that is still there. I am giving myself time to absorb it all and then must move forward. 7y
kspenmoll Doing a lot of #comfortreading myself these days. @mcipher - now have to read Kent Haruf - which book do you all suggest I start with @slhbooks @LisaJo @Eamann 7y
kspenmoll Thx @Liberty for addressing this slump... 7y
Suelizbeth I've been mainlining Kay Scarpetta mystery/thrillers and they snapped me out of my slump. 7y
LisaJo @kspenmoll he has a wonderful trilogy that starts with Plainsong. However, if you just kind of want to get your feet wet you can start with Our Souls at Night. It's a quick read even if you're a slow reader. It's less than 200 pages. It'll get you used to his writing style. Hint: he does not use quotes for conversations. 7y

slhbooks @kspenmoll I'd recommend starting with Plainsong. So good💖 7y

Quiet heartbreak. Except for that moment when I openly cried loud enough for the boyfriend to get worried.

Ooof, this book is really good. A quiet beauty. A slow slide into heartbreak.

The story of four aid workers in the aftermath of an earthquake, the story of weakness and strength. Definitely excited to dive into this story of what makes a hero.

Enjoying the last months (weeks, days?) of sun before my first Minnesota winter and took a walk to the library. Not sure if I'll get around to tackling the Whitehead before it's due back but am psyched for After Disasters.
