A lush and gorgeously written debut, packed with action, intrigue, and heart-racing romance. Alexa Hollen is a fighter. Forced to disguise herself as a boy and serve in the king's army, Alex uses her quick wit and fierce sword-fighting skills to earn a spot on the elite prince's guard. But when a powerful sorcerer sneaks into the palace in the dead of night, even Alex, who is virtually unbeatable, can't prevent him from abducting her, her fellow guard and friend Rylan, and Prince Damian, taking them through the treacherous wilds of the jungle and deep into enemy territory. The longer Alex is held captive with both Rylan and the prince, the more she realizes that she is not the only one who has been keeping dangerous secrets. And suddenly, after her own secret is revealed, Alex finds herself confronted with two men vying for her heart: the safe and steady Rylan, who has always cared for her, and the dark, intriguing Damian. With hidden foes lurking around every corner, is Alex strong enough to save herself and the kingdom she's sworn to protect?

The #FairytaleReading Challenge was hard for me to pick for the month of March. I had a couple retellings on my shelves that said they were retellings, but didn‘t feel really connected to the story. I happen to come across this one, and after some consultation with a friend, it‘s my choice for the month.

I absolutely loved this YA novel! It was fast paced and had a very interesting plot line. I loved the main characters and was very invested in their storyline. Alexa was a strong female and I liked her dedication to loyalty and family. I can‘t wait to read the next book in the series!

I liked this book. It is set in medieval times, so lots of castles, knights, and graphic fight scenes. Has a great storyline with enjoyable plot twists. I would give this book an 8/10. Recommended to people who like action with a bit of romance ;)

I enjoyed this book. However the plot is a bit predictable and the writing is rudimentary. However, I enjoyed the story and have ordered the next book in the series. It could easily be a stand alone book if one did not wish to continue the series. I however want to see what the author intends for her characters. Overall good book.

I am a YA fanatic. I'm actually working on relaunching my book blog with an adolescent lit focus. Defy is one of my absolute favorite YA love stories, and if you haven't read it, go out and pick it up right now! #YAlove #17booklove

Claireluana Thanks for the tip! Haven't heard of it!!! 7y

This wasn't my favorite book, but I did enjoy some aspects of it. I wished I could've seen some different ways they could've used Alexa's disguise as a man in a new way. What way that is Im not entirely sure, buy definitely something other than what happened. I will probably read the next one just to see what happens after Damian becomes king.

I always want the "girl-dresses-as-boy" trope to bring something new to the table--to say something interesting and different about gender, about sexual orientations, about assumptions and desire. This book did not do any of that, and was therefore not my cup of tea.

readergeek Can we like it for the sharp and stabby on the cover though because I do. 8y
jaidajones @readergeek the cover IS lovely! The intense heteronormativity less so--at least, for my palate! 8y
readergeek I am with you a hundred percent on that. 8y

I'm thinking it may be time for another bookshelf purchase - or a massive reorganization. So glad it's almost the weekend - anyone else get really super excited about rearranging all your books?

brendanmleonard Yes! My wife hates books that lay on their side, and I have bought so many over the summer that a reorganization is due. 8y
Suzze I hate books on their side, so once every few months I count them, then find that many books that I donate to the library. It can be difficult to choose, but I'm only gonna live so long. 8y

jessberk13 Beautiful shelves 😍😍😍😍 8y
stacybmartin These are all my read books (I've got a separate TBR shelf in my room) - so as I finish them they get piled in here until I get antsy at the disorder. I can't seem to cull books - I'm pretty cutthroat about all other belongings but books I hoard. 😳 @brendanmleonard @Suzze 8y
stacybmartin @jessica thank you!! 8y
