How to Be Perfect
How to Be Perfect: The Correct Answer to Every Moral Question | Michael Schur
From the creator of The Good Place and the cocreator of Parks and Recreation, a hilarious, thought-provoking guide to living an ethical life, drawing on 2,500 years of deep thinking from around the world. Most people think of themselves as good, but its not always easy to determine whats good or badespecially in a world filled with complicated choices and pitfalls and booby traps and bad advice. Fortunately, many smart philosophers have been pondering this conundrum for millennia and they have guidance for us. With bright wit and deep insight, How to Be Perfect explains concepts like deontology, utilitarianism, existentialism, ubuntu, and more so we can sound cool at parties and become better people. Schur starts off with easy ethical questions like Should I punch my friend in the face for no reason? (No.) and works his way up to the most complex moral issues we all face. Such as: Can I still enjoy great art if it was created by terrible people? How much money should I give to charity? Why bother being good at all when there are no consequences for being bad? And much more. By the time the book is done, well know exactly how to act in every conceivable situation, so as to produce a verifiably maximal amount of moral good. We will be perfect, and all our friends will be jealous. OK, not quite. Instead, well gain fresh, funny, inspiring wisdom on the toughest issues we face every day.

Did you watch The Good Place & find yourself thinking, “gosh, I wish they talked even more about moral philosophy on this show”? Then boy do I have the book for you.

Don‘t expect a book about the show. Instead, this was an easily digestible & laugh out loud funny introduction to a bunch of philosophies on how & why to be a good person. The addition of the cast from the show was a delight, & I found myself wanting to explore even more. 🌕🌕🌕🌕🌗

Not quite as much about the show as I would have liked, but this is definitely a fun listen.

TieDyeDude Yeah, rather than a behind-the-scenes for the show, it is more of an exploration of some of the philosophies mentioned in the show or used as the basis of some episodes. I found it interesting and entertaining, but there is a The Good Place podcast if you're looking for more about the making of the show. 5mo
peanutnine @TieDyeDude The Good Place podcast is so good!! I loved the detail they went into and the many guests 😍 5mo

If you loved The Good Place as much as I did, then read this book. It‘s smart and funny and I learned something. I loved the fact that the actors from the show were included in reading some parts and this was just so educational but entertaining. Definitely a top pick for me.

TieDyeDude Agreed! It was nice to get a deeper dive on some of the things touched on the show. A perfect companion piece. 6mo
Victoriahoperose @TieDyeDude yes!! And it was really fun for such a dense topic!! I almost didn‘t get this one because I wasn‘t sure if it was going to be boring but I‘m so glad I read it! 6mo

April's update to the nonfiction #readingbracket2023
How to be Perfect was hilarious and informative but Bi is still leading the way for the year so far.
Will post my fiction bracket later - need to make some hard decisions there 😅

Read a review by @peanutnine and picked this up. Glad I did.
Good, fun, informative. A humorous way to learn about different philosophical schools of thought and ethics. Schur gives relatable examples and ways in which to apply the ideas to our everyday lives - so we can be perfect (or at least be better 🙂).

This was such a fun way to learn about ethics & philosophy. Very basic introduction to apply the principles to every day life & try to be a better person. Highly recommend the audio as it is read by the author & the cast of the Good Place makes appearances. I chuckled my way through this but felt like I learned something at the end

Self help isn‘t my thing (only read this for book club), but as an audiobook I didn‘t mind it.

5 ⭐️ It brought me comfort to know that I‘m not the only person who overthinks everyday things (shopping carts!) and I especially appreciated the last chapter regarding apologies. The audio was fantastic, the author is an excellent narrator and the special appearances of the cast from “The Good Place” made for a wholly enjoyable experience! The moral questions and presented solutions were smart and relatable, relayed with a healthy dose of humor.

I cannot say enough good things about this! Written by the creator of the tv show “The Good Place”, this is a delightful introduction to philosophical schools of thought on how to be a good person. The author‘s interest in this subject came from his research for the show. I feel like I learned some things while giggling AND may be able to use the concepts to be “perfect” 😂
Excellent narration/audio production which is definitely the way to go.

Bookwormjillk I bought this audiobook when it came out and I keep forgetting to read it. 2y

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ A poignant, often funny, look at modern ethics: moral dilemmas, moral reasoning, utilitarian limits, virtue signaling, moral exhaustion, etc. This spoke directly to the spastic rule follower in me, who is so hyperaware of being considerate and respectful, often to a fault, resulting in sometimes being a passive-aggressive asshole. So, yeah, I really enjoyed this!

BiblioLitten I loved that show…The Good Place. 2y
britt_brooke @BiblioLitten I‘ve not seen it (yet)! 2y
Cinfhen Excellent review and now that you wrote the phrase passive aggressive asshole I think I might be one too!!! 🙋🏼‍♀️ 2y

I really enjoyed this audio. I liked the way the footnotes were incorporated, as they are essential to the humor of the book and making it more accessible. The cast of The Good Place read all the quotations and references while the author expertly reads the rest of the text. Good as a companion piece to The Good Place or on its own as an introduction to moral philosophy, which more people should be aware of in this day and age.

The audio of this includes readings and sound cues from cast members of "The Good Place", so while I don't think you need to watch five seasons of TV to appreciate this book, it wouldn't hurt. Basically, if you wish you could sit in on one of Chili's classes where he tries to sum up philosophy, this book might be for you. But also if you've ever just spent a bunch of time thinking about the ethics of tipping or something.
