My Dearest Darkest

Two girls, inexplicably linked. An ancient creature rising in the dark. And a town on the verge of being devoured. My Dearest Darkest is a sharp, feminist horror debut, about girls claiming their power, and the price we sometimes pay for wanting. Finch Chamberlain is the newest transfer student to the ultra-competitive Ulalume Academy... but she's also not what she seems. Months before school started, Finch and her parents got into an accident that should have left her dead at the bottom of the ocean. But something monstrous, and ancient, and terrifying, wouldn't let her drown. Finch doesn't know why she woke up after her heart stopped, but since dying she's felt a constant pull from the school and the surrounding town of Rainwater, like something on the island is calling to her. Selena St. Claire sees right through Finch, and she knows something is seriously wrong with her. But despite Selena's suspicion, she feels drawn to Finch and has a sinking feeling that from now on the two will be inexplicably linked to one another. One night Finch, Selena, and her friends accidentally summon a carnivorous creature of immense power in the depths of the school. It promises to grant every desire the girls have kept locked away in their insecure hearts--beauty, power,adoration--in exchange for a price: human body parts. But as the cost of their wanting becomes more deadly, Finch and Selena must learn to work together to stop the horror they unleashed, before it consumes the entire island.

Book 158🎧 4⭐️

Becoming a real fan of K Cottingham! This was one wild story and I did not expect it to get paranormal!

There‘s some lore in this small town, and nobody‘s talking!

Whatever the future might bring, whatever darkness might be lurking around the corner, she‘d always have this.

This was a good book and I really enjoyed the Lovecraftian twist at the end. After the summer of Finch's accdent, she gets into the exclusive Ulalume Academy. There she makes new friends including the one that is trapped in the tunnels under the school 👾
For those participating in the #Necronomathon this would be a good pick. @Patchshank

3 stars, This was creepy AF. It was okay, I liked most of the characters but I don't think we got enough of Sumera or Simon. Only the two very main characters were properly developed. I also thought the final fight scene was way too drawn out.

YA mix of Lovecraftian paranormal horror & dark academia. Strong gothic vibes & a solid narrative with some well-executed character composition & a good sapphic component. There's a dark Mean Girls vibe to the social aspect & the atmosphere is fun. The story also has some fantastic creepy vibes, with a few moments of strong violence & gore. A good under the covers read & definitely one to contemplate before reading it after dark. 4.5 stars.

I love that gothic themed reads are making a return! This book is set in Maine at an exclusive school. The characters were just creepy, just likable enough you‘ll take the journey. #readingchallenge2022

In honor of my sister‘s friend‘s novel getting published (& tweeted about by Stephen King!) we‘re talking dark academia today!

1. Yup! Love me some creepy gothic nonsense in the world of higher learning! 🤣
2. 👆🏻 Aforementioned sister‘s friend‘s book!
3. Ossa University. But the students call it the Ossuary. 😏

#SundayFunday Have a great day, and remember to tag me! 💙

KateReadsYA Omg just bought the tagged book and am so excited to read it. Is this the one your sister's friend wrote??? 2y

braddsibbersen If I might name drop my own Mad Science U series here... (though the school's name is kind of mundane - Madiport Island University). The University of Cosmopolis from the writings of Edward Heron-Allen is another good one. 2y
BookmarkTavern @braddsibbersen I will definitely be looking both those suggestions up! 👍🏻👍🏻 Thanks for the recs! 2y
LindaLappin the darkest I know is The Secret History by Donna Tartt... 2y
