I told you this was a thirst so great it could carve rivers. This fierce debut from award-winning writer Evelyn Araluen confronts the tropes and iconography of an unreconciled nation with biting satire and lyrical fury. Dropbear interrogates the complexities of colonial and personal history with an alternately playful, tender and mournful intertextual voice, deftly navigating the responsibilities that gather from sovereign country, the spectres of memory and the debris of settler-coloniality. This innovative mix of poetry and essay offers an eloquent witness to the entangled present, an uncompromising provocation of history, and an embattled but redemptive hope for a decolonial future.

This pretty little cover belies the contents. And maybe that‘s the point? A metaphor for Australia perhaps?

This collection of poems & essays explore Australia‘s colonialist history, stories & literature. New light is shone on iconic stories Australians hold dear, like Gumnut Babies.

I had to work hard to process it & supported my understanding by listening to interviews with the author & reading reviews.

Very clever & thought provoking 🖤💛❤️

LeeRHarry Is this one the Stella Prize winner? I knew nothing about it but thanks to your review now I know I want to read it 😊 2y

Thought I should finally read this since it‘s just won the Stella Prize. Interesting interplay of Aboriginal, colonial and modern Australian culture. I really enjoyed the pieces about her partner and family which tended to be the most straightforward. While I recognised a lot of the tropes, iconography and literary references, I think I‘d need a more academic understanding of literature to fully get it. Have you read this @MrsMalaprop ?

CarolynM @LapReader I was a bit horrified to realise the Banksia Men were meant to reference Aboriginal people😡😢 So awful, and it would never have occurred to me. 2y

Coming down from my 41st b‘day high. Tagged is a book of poetry I got from my partner as 1 of his birthday gifts to me. I wanted it as it said in the latest Readings paper that it contains a poem about the gumnut babies! Other gifts included a red, vintage dress to wear to a neighbour‘s wedding next weekend, a cushion for my new place and some beautiful loose leaf tea. The Goddess bubbling milk bath is part of a pamper pack from my mother in law.

Smarkies Happy birthday dear! 🎉🎉🎉🎉🎉 3y

CarolynM I read a rave review for this just a day or two ago. It seems like a strange title for the sort of book it appears to be. I'm intrigued, especially as I was just talking about dropbears with @Reggie 3y
Reggie It must be a sign @CarolynM 🐨 3y
Gillyreads @CarolynM originally the title was going to be Dropbear Poetics but they changed it before it was released 3y
