Cone Cat
Cone Cat | Sarah Howden
2 posts | 1 read
One day, Jeremy wakes up at the vet's with a giant cone around his head. In a momentary existential crisis, he resigns himself to his new role as clumsy, smelly Cone Cat. That is, until the cone becomes instrumental in lapping up the last few bites of cereal on the breakfast table. Surprisingly, Cone Cat can do a lot of things old Jeremy couldn't. He can hunt spiders with ease, collect stuffing from the couch, and disguise himself as a bowl to steal a scoop of ice cream at a birthday party. When the cone is removed the next day, Jeremy starts to miss it. Will he ever get another chance to indulge in the tricks he pulled off as Cone Cat? It doesn't take him too long to find out ... With lively illustrations and plenty of wit, this hilarious picture book about adapting to seemingly im-paw-ssible situations is sure to please kids and cat-lovers alike.

A little Moxie update: we have switched from the cone to a suitical recovery suit and it is a LIFESAVER that greatly decreased both of our anxiety.

Shout-out to everyone who sent well wishes and @Megabooks for the advice ❤️

Elizabeth2 What a sweetie, all curled up on your lap! 😍❤️🥰 3y

julesG Such a cute catsuit. 😉😁 My cat had to wear a red one for weeks after her neutering (spaying? Never know which one to use) caused an infection. 3y

swishandflick @julesG oh no! The suit caused an infection? 3y
swishandflick @Elizabeth2 I know, it's the only spot she wants to be! And I hate to move her so I just sit here hungry 😂 3y
squirrelbrain It‘s a very cute suit, and she does look quite calm and comfortable now. You got this! 3y
Scochrane26 Didn‘t know those suits existed. Hopefully a better solution than the cone—looks like it. 3y
julesG No, the vet at the clinic who did the operation said, the cat licked the wound/sutures. Not true. She was wearing the suit and the cone from day 1 after the surgery, since she wriggled free of the cone a lot. My vet suspects the suture material was compromised. This theory is supported by the fact that the clinic never forwarded the lab results of the swab they did on the wound when I had to take my cat in for the emergency treatment. ⬇️ 3y
julesG The wound was infected. Needed cleaning. Needed to heal on its own. Cat was on antibiotics and painkillers. And manuka honey so the wound would heal faster/better. She had to wear the suit until the wound was closed properly. This took weeks. It was three years ago. I sometimes think she has anniversary symptoms, because she's snuggling up to me a lot during February and March each year. 3y
swishandflick @julesG Ooooh, gotcha! Sounds like a nightmare! Glad she was ok 🐾 3y
Megabooks So glad I was able to help!! 💜💜 And botm is up! I went with 3y
Bookzombie The suit looks like a great solution. She is adorable. 💕🐈 I hope she heals quickly. 3y
Hollie She looks so cute! 3y
Librariana Ditto to a lot of what has been said already! 😊 I'm glad you were able to learn of a better solution for your kitty cat. She does look happier and so peaceful while she rests 💜 3y
DogMomIrene That suit does look much cozier than a cone, even the soft cones I‘ve seen. Sending healing vibes little one💜🐱🐾 3y
Bette She looks so content. ❤️🐱 3y
Tera66 She looks so much happier.💙 3y
HOTPock3tt Yay! Hang in there moxie! 💖🐱 3y

Keep me in your thoughts ya'll. Moxie got spayed today and we're both miserable and anxious. And there's no real way to "contain" her in my apartment, so that's gonna be fun for the next loooooong two weeks. Does anyone have tips? Or possible alternatives to the cone? She'd give Houdini a run for his money and I can't have eyes on her 24/7 ?

Tamra I‘ve been through it 3 times and truthfully, they fare pretty well without much intervention. They heal so quickly. 3y
HOTPock3tt I‘m sorry I don‘t have any tips, but fingers crossed that you and moxie come through it ok! ❤️❤️#MoxieFanClub 3y
Lovesbooks87 My cat just had her cone taken off after three weeks and the first couple of days were rough on everyone with all of our anxiety being high. But she got used to it after that. We just had to put her food on a plate inside of a bowl and we had her drink of it a tall measuring cup because she had a hard time getting down far enough with her cone on. 3y

Bookish_AF We kept our cat in the bathroom for the first few days and then let her be out in the upstairs. The sad meows were terrible, but we made sure to visit her a lot during the confinement! She survived the cone, although it is covered in claw marks from her trying to get it off 😂 we also propped up her food dish on something to make it easier to reach with the cone. I remember it feeling like an eternity as well, but you will get through it! 3y
MsMelissa My dog had a circular neck pillow instead of a cone when she had surgery a couple of years back. It was way more comfortable for her since she needed to sleep with it on. I‘m not sure how small they make them. 3y
Megabooks Some cats can get around this, but it is an alternative as well https://www.chewy.com/sungrow-post-surgery-dog-cat-recovery/dp/183554?utm_source... ❤️ your BOTM loving neighborhood vet! 3y
MsMelissa @Megabooks Yes! That‘s what I just posted about. Way better than a cone. 3y
Megabooks And I got to all these easily by googling “cat donut collar” that‘s what the first item is and may lead you to different alternatives/cheaper brands. 3y
MicheleinPhilly Poor thing. The cone of shame anxiety is real. You got this, mama. 3y
Megabooks @MsMelissa for sure! Most pets find them much easier to deal with! 3y
Lcsmcat For this I‘ve heard you can also use a “onesie” like this https://thecatsite.com/threads/alternatives-to-the-cone.328751/ 3y
swishandflick @Megabooks thank you!! What are your thoughts on the "containment" piece? Should I try and keep her in the bathroom overnight? I'm mostly worried because the litter box won't fit in there and I won't know if she slips the collar. But it's so hard to keep her from trying to jump on things! 3y
Megabooks It is hard with kittens to keep them quiet. I generally don‘t worry as much about containment after the first 48 hours because the internal bleeding risk is much lower at that point, especially since this is a very juvenile spay (as opposed to say, a spay plus c-section.) Can you close off a different small room? Is your apartment already small? 3y
Megabooks As far as the suture line on her abdomen, some ways of doing it are more dependent on needing rest to prevent them coming out. I will say rarely is anyone able to make the full two weeks of confinement! (edited) 3y
Megabooks Also this is calming for some cats as far as just controlling the crazy. It‘s a calming pheromone naturally produced by cats. It works wonders for some, other people don‘t notice a difference. https://www.chewy.com/brands/feliway-6614?gclid=EAIaIQobChMI4tb0ooqJ7wIVq_LACh3x... (edited) 3y
swishandflick @Megabooks ya, my apartment is already pretty small, it's just my bedroom and everything else. She's in my bedroom with me right now, but reallyyy trying to jump on/off the bed, and to all of the little nooks and crannies she usually plays in 3y
Megabooks You can try the Feliway spray, but with that size place, I‘d probably just let her be out with you. It‘s just really hard with the young ones! 3y
swishandflick @Megabooks I really appreciate all of the advice!!! Thank you! 3y
Leftcoastzen Awww , poor thing. How long does she have to wear it? 3y
swishandflick @Leftcoastzen supposed to be two weeks, but I just got her a "recovery suit" to wear instead and it's a MUCH better alternative ❤️ 3y
Leftcoastzen Oh , good ! Cones are brutal for both parties. 3y
