Overcoming Borderline Personality Disorder
Overcoming Borderline Personality Disorder: A Family Guide for Healing and Change | Valerie Porr, M.A.
2 posts | 1 read | 5 to read
Borderline personality disorder (BPD) is characterized by unstable moods, negative self-image, dangerous impulsivity, and tumultuous relationships. Many people with BPD excel in academics and careers while revealing erratic, self-destructive, and sometimes violent behavior only to those with whom they are intimate. Others have trouble simply holding down a job or staying in school. Overcoming Borderline Personality Disorder is a compassionate and informative guide to understanding this profoundly unsettling--and widely misunderstood--mental illness, believed to affect approximately 6% of the general population. Rather than viewing people with BPD as manipulative opponents in a bitter struggle, or pitying them as emotional invalids, Valerie Porr cites cutting-edge science to show that BPD is a true neurobiological disorder and not, as many come to believe, a character flaw or the result of bad parenting. Porr then clearly and accessibly explains what BPD is, which therapies have proven effective, and how to rise above the weighty stigma associated with the disorder. Offering families and loved ones supportive guidance that both acknowledges the difficulties they face and shows how they can be overcome, Porr teaches empirically-supported and effective coping behaviors and interpersonal skills, such as new ways of talking about emotions, how to be aware of nonverbal communication, and validating difficult experiences. These skills are derived from Dialectical Behavior Therapy and Mentalization-based Therapy, two evidence-based treatments that have proven highly successful in reducing family conflict while increasing trust. Overcoming Borderline Personality Disorder is an empowering and hopeful resource for those who wish to gain better understanding of the BPD experience--and to make use of these insights in day-to-day family interactions. *Trigger Warning*
A lot of people I've been asking me why I was sent to the hospital and when I first got out I wasn't ready to talk about it but now I think I am.
I suffer from PTSD, BPD, Bipolar II and Panic Disorder. Long story short, I was going through a medication change and it sent me spiraling out of control. I had a complete mental breakdown. I started self-harming again and I was about to do something really stupid...⬇️⬇️⬇️

BeansPage I know this isn't book related and I know it's not the month of May yet, but I'm here as testament to tell you that mental illness is a very real thing. People suffer from it every day. It is not as simple as a mood change. It is something very real that we battle with everyday. If I hadn't gotten help when I did, I might not be here today. 5y
BeansPage Even when you feel like you're at your lowest point, even when you feel like no one's there and you're all alone, all you have to do is simply reach out and you will find people who care. There are people who will help you. Please don't ever think that you only have one option left. And at the very least if you feel like you cannot reach out to somebody, you can reach out to me. My phone is always on.You are never alone & you ARE loved 💖 5y
Schnoebs I work in a mental health ED and experience the entire scale of mental health concerns and addiction concerns. It‘s really hard to be willing to accept that you need help but I‘m so happy you did 🥰 and I‘m really happy you have such a supportive community that can be here for you when you need it. With the reading, don‘t feel too pressured over anything. It‘s meant to be fun. Maybe try something easy like an audiobook or manga/graphic novel 👍 (edited) 5y

RvnclawWhovian Thank you so much for being vulnerable and sharing this. I dealt with SAD earlier this year for the first time in my life and wish I had read something like this in the beginning instead of thinking I was alone and a burden to my loved ones. I‘m so glad you got the help you needed and are feeling better. I haven‘t been part of the Litsy community long but I‘m already in love with how accepting this community is and I‘m so happy I found it ❤️ (edited) 5y

SleepyDragon I hope we didn't make you feel like you had to share, though it was very strong of you to share. I also hope you didn't interpret my last comment as asking you why you were in the hospital. I was really just qualifying my "advice" about getting back into reading. I believe in the power of positivity, and there is a whole lot aimed straight at you right now. ?? 5y

This book is amazing! This book is written in a such a way as to help give family members of persons diagnosed with BPD (Borderline Personality Disorder). However, as a person with BPD I found it most helpful. It's as if I was able to step outside of myself and look at me and my actions and thoughts from an outsider's point of view. It was monumentally helpful in helping me understand more about myself and why I do things that I do. Great book!
