For readers of Elizabeth Strout and Anne Tyler, a powerful novel about a man on the run from himself, by Governor's General Award-winning author Kate Pullinger. On a rain-soaked Vancouver sidewalk in 1995, a homeless man fights for breath. Forest Green is the story of how he got there. Arthur Lunn is a golden boy who spends long summer days roaming the hills and swimming in the lakes of the Okanagan Valley. But the Great Depression is making life difficult, even in Art's remote and bucolic hometown. Soon, Art finds himself caught up in a battle between the town and the vagrants flowing through it, and before long the tension reaches a boiling point. A catastrophe follows--and changes everything. The trauma from this event shapes and haunts Art's life moving forward, from his experiences as a soldier in World War Two to his reckless, nomadic working days in logging camps across British Columbia to his turbulent relationship with his one great love, Rose--a woman he cannot believe he deserves. Painful, poignant yet full of hope, Forest Green explores the way trauma can warp our lives and the way love can ultimately mend us.

Pickpick

Forest Green starts in 1995, when the main character, Arthur Lunn, is homeless and badly beaten in the streets of Vancouver. The story then travels backwards to 1934, when Art was seven years old and witnessed an event that would shape the rest of his life. The rest of the novel follows Art through the decades and explores how his childhood trauma and the guilt that accompanies it continues to haunt him. ⬇️

candority Forest Green is a well-written and thought-provoking novel. Even though it deals with heavy topics, it is a soft and quiet story and I was fully invested in Art‘s life. The book ends on a hopeful note, which I really appreciated. 4⭐ This was my #doublespin pick from September. My library hold came in a week too late! @TheAromaofBooks 5y

Pickpick

A quiet novel that follows one person‘s life from a 1930s childhood in BC‘s Okanagan to old age in Vancouver. Growing up during the depression, enlisting underage as a soldier in WWII, working for decades in forestry afterwards—an ultimately hopeful tale despite tragedies, frayed family connections and alcohol addiction. The #audiobook narration by Jonathan Widdifield kept me engaged throughout. #shadowgiller #canlit

Mehso-so

Heavy on dialogue and nothing too exciting.

#ShadowGiller @Lindy

Lindy Well, that‘s a relief! I already have more than 12 contenders for my longlist. 😅 5y
candority Oh no. Maybe I won‘t rush to read this one... 5y

Penny_LiteraryHoarders @candority it was okay maybe it just wasn't the right one for me right now. But I found it a little too slow and not too exciting. 😔 5y
candority Good to know. I‘m not really in the mood for those types of books right now either 5y

Another trip to the library! I'm buried in books! 3 of the 4 are for the #ShadowGiller.

I'm really looking forward to reading Songs for the End of the World because Saleema Nawaz's Bone and Bread was fantastic. Songs has a nice heft to it too!

Have to read Forest Green first though - higher demand for it.

Noopiming is the other one tucked in there along with Sisters.
