Dark Tides
Dark Tides: A Novel | Philippa Gregory
#1 New York Times bestselling author Philippa Gregorys new historical novel tracks the rise of the Tidelands family in London, Venice, and New England. Midsummers Eve, 1670. A wealthy man waits outside a poor London warehouse to meet with Alinor, the woman he failed twenty-one years before. He has everything to offer, wealth, land, status, and he believes she has the only thing he cannot buy: his son and heir. The warehouse is failing, clinging on to poor business in Restoration Londona city gone mad for pleasure. But will Alinor and her family sell-out to Sir James? Meanwhile in New England, Alinors brother Ned, who rebelled against the Crown, cannot find justice in the New World, as the Kings revenge stretches across the Atlanic and turns the pioneers against each other and against the native Americans. A beautiful widow, Livia, arrives from Venice, telling them Alinors son, Rob, has drowned and that she needs the familys help with a profitable new trade. She will import beautiful statues of marble and bronze to fuel the classical craze among the wealthy landowners. She enchants the warehouse family with her son, their new heir; her sensual carefree warmth; and promises of wealth to come. She captures Sir James and spins them all into a mesh of deceit which only the brave little daughter of the warehouse can break. Sarah searches for the truth about Livia in Venice bringing home the stunning denouement to this, the second book in the Fairmile series.

Good. A slow burner but worth the wait for the twists and reveals in the story. Full of intrigue and family secrets.

Just finished rereading Dark Tides because my husband bought me the next book in this series, Dawnlands. I love Philippa Gregory‘s books so much. They‘re definitely not nonfiction but she uses real people and historical events to move her plot along. I adore the strong women in this story, and I LOVE to hate the villain, Livia. I despised Livia more on this reread than my last read, and I can‘t want to see what she‘s up to in the next installment.

EadieB @JacqMac You need to read Brad Simkulet review on Goodreads. It's really funny! His mother told him to read the book at age 13 and it leads him into trouble! 3y

My hubby went back to his office this week. After working from home for 18 months. My youngest started high school. And my middle is at work. I‘m home alone! It has been so long. I‘m going to read, in silence, with nobody to interrupt me. Sigh. I have been looking forward to this day.

Philippa Gregory is a superb author. I‘m confident I‘ll like every book that she writes. This book is the 2nd in her Fairmile Series.I didn‘t like this book as much as I liked Tidelands, but it was still a good story that kept me interested.I hated one of the main characters, but that‘s what the author intended.I loved reading about Venice.I wasn‘t as interested in the storyline that took place in the New England. Thanks you to Goodreads for the ARC.

A dual narrative following two decades after the events in Tidelands. Two separate storylines that run parallel. One for Alinor & family in London, one for brother Ned in America. Good writing, but not Gregory's typical royalty fare. Great atmosphere & a mix of characters: good, morally gray, naive, & devious. A slow-build plot with decent pacing. Some admittedly convenient plot pieces that did earn an eyeroll or two. Still a very fun read.

I love this series. It just keeps getting better. I like that she made up the characters herself though I haven't read any of her other books. This picks up about 20 years after Tidelands left off.

I really enjoyed this one. It isn‘t the same as Tidelands in atmosphere and tone, but it is a great look at where the characters have all landed 20 years after Tidelands ends. Livia, the Italian widow of Alinor‘s son Rob, is a real piece of work! Her attitude and actions really drove the story and I loved to hate her!! Some of these characters really get what is coming to them by the end. It‘ll be a much-too-long wait for the next book. #NetGalley
