My Brilliant Life is a moving, earnest, and deeply-felt exploration of a unique family in all its joys and disappointments . . . an utter delight. Claire Lombardo, New York Times bestselling author of The Most Fun We Ever Had Despite being house-bound due to an accelerated-aging disorder, Areum lives life to its fullest, vicariously through the stories of his parents, conversations with Little Grandpa Janghis sixty-year-old neighbor and best friend, and through the books he reads to visit the places he would otherwise never see. For several months, Areum has been working on a manuscript, piecing together his parents often embellished stories about his family and childhood. He hopes to present it on his birthday, as a final gift to his mom and dad; their own falling-in-love story. As his seventeenth birthday approaches, Areum moves into the long-term ward in the city hospital, bringing abrupt change to his daily life; from a new friend who might be moreor lessthan she seems, to his loving parents who are definitely keeping something from him. My Brilliant Life interweaves the past and present of a tight-knit family, finding joy in even the most difficult times. This novel snuck up on me and captured my heart. Finished the cozy mystery last night and now I'm moving on to something a little more literary. I don't read a lot of books in translation though I generally like them when I do. What is the last book you read in translation?

charl08 This really good novel set in the aftermath of a civil war (it's not named, but probably El Salvador) 3y
TheLudicReader The last translated book I read was 3y
valeriegeary @TheLudicReader sounds intriguing! 🙌🏻 3y

This story might be a little too linear for some people‘s tastes but it‘s a quick read so I think it‘s worth it. It highlights a stark juxtaposition between what it means to be a child versus feeling like an adult and how that line can feel blurry dependent on your circumstance.

“I hope my heart will fly with the wind to go to you.”
What to say about this novel, good question.

⭐️⭐️⭐️ This recently translated South Korean novel is about a boy with progeria (a genetic disorder that causes rapid aging) who is born to teenaged parents. A unique family emerges. As told from the endearing perspective of 16-year-old Areum as he navigates his reality. His eagerness to learn is grounded in the consciousness of his short life. It‘s a tad made-for-tv-movie-ish at times, but still an utterly heartfelt story.

Cinfhen I knew someone who had this disease/ it‘s really heartbreaking ( I was only a child myself and I remember being so physically frightened by the boy‘s appearance 💔) Now as an adult, my heartbreaks for the parents too. What a devastating illness. I don‘t think I could read this one. I‘m curious what drew you towards this book? 3y
BarbaraBB This sounds heartbreaking yet Your review makes me want to read it! 3y
britt_brooke @Cinfhen Liberty talked about it on #AlltheBooks and it just sounds so different. I hadn‘t heard of it prior to that. Somehow, it wasn‘t as sad as I thought it would be which I was glad for. 3y

This is how I start most days. It‘s peaceful, and this energetic 10 month old demands it! ? I just started the tagged novel about a South Korean boy with progeria (premature aging, short life) and his teenaged parents. Originally published in 2011, it‘s just been translated into English. I heard about it on #AlltheBooks last week.
