I found this to be a delightful and insightful novel about two Muslim immigrants searching for a place to belong. Though there are very serious and somber plot points, there were times where Masood‘s wit had me laughing out loud. Anvar is simply charming - I found him to be a more developed character than Azza. At times, her victimhood was her only personality trait. Some themes might be executed a little clumsily, but this is a rewarding read.4⭐️

Part love story. Part societal and religious expose. Part tragedy. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/5
I enjoyed listening to it as I would not have been able to read the middle eastern languages via text and the actors did an amazing job. Just not my genre whish is why the so-so

I thoroughly enjoyed this read! I am thankful it was picked because I'm not sure I would have picked it up on my own otherwise. I loved the humor injected into the book and all the tense drama! This was a great round of #LMPBC !

I‘m so glad this was a #LMPBC selection for #GroupE. Masood weaves just two tales of two very different Muslim/Muslim-American experiences. Anvar was hilarious, definitely laugh out loud moments, but also gave good attention to parent-child dynamics…he provided the levity at times to Safwa‘s trying experience.

JackOBotts @kellyann28 - the book is on its way to you. Should arrive my next Tuesday! 2y

I like this book and the style it‘s written in. It‘s a library book I borrowed for a #LibraryThing reading challenge to read a book whose author is from one of the “Stans” (ASIAN BOOK CHALLENGE 2022 - IN MAY IT'S THE "STANS"). The author is from #Pakistan, and this story begins in #Karachi. I set aside the other four books I‘m reading to start this book! ?

I‘m so glad you picked this book for #LMPBC, @Catsandbooks … I loved it! Very well-written, with parts that were really painful to read, but then again, I cannot believe how much I laughed while reading this. Anvar is hilarious, and his whole family situation was so entertaining.

This was a great audio - fantastic narrators…. But I had to hurry up and finish with the print! These are two very different immigration stories, that come together in a dramatic and heartbreaking way. I appreciated the humor in Anvar, the pain in Safwa‘s, and how they intermingled… it‘s darker than the blurb suggests.

Well worth the read, though it was not funny like the blurb says. There was a lot of serious stuff in this book. #BookSpin @TheAromaofBooks

So far The Bad Muslim Discount is not at all what I expected. That‘s not necessarily a bad thing, I just didn‘t realize it was going to be kind of dark.

On Litsy while I wait for the opening ceremony to start! Anyone else here an Olympics junky? I wrote the final chapters of my dissertation while watching a previous year…

This book, though! Thought provoking and some really lovely prose. The plot, however, came off as more of a vehicle for profound statements than as something that stands alone… still, I enjoyed it a lot! July book 4

Texreader Our family really enjoys the olympics but we seem to be off this year. Didn‘t even realize opening ceremony was upon us 3y
LiteraryinLawrence Yes, me too!! We currently don‘t have a tv but I‘m streaming the swimming trials to get in the mood for other events! 3y
Megabooks I watched as well! Big Olympic junkie! 3y
Larkken @Texreader @LiteraryinLawrence @Megabooks Olympics junkies unite!! The opening ceremony has nothing on the actual events for me. Can‘t wait to watch some of the new events! 3y

I love a good immigrant story and recommend this one. There are two storylines that come together halfway in. Anvar‘s story - especially with his parents is often laugh out loud funny. Safwa‘s story is heartbreaking. Yet, the author wove that comedy and drama together seamlessly. I do wish she would have written another path (even undocumented) for Azza to arrive in America.

Chapters alternate between the stories of the male/female MC. The female MC‘s story was emotionally difficult; although fictitious, this is the inescapable real life of so many girls and women. The author included many humorous moments to balance the heaviness. The novel‘s themes include: death/grief, war, generational trauma, misogyny, domestic abuse, agency, regret/forgiveness,refugees, religion, community, familial expectations.

TheNerdyProfessor This is on my TBR list! 3y
Shievad It is very good! I borrowed it from the library and slacked on starting it. So I had to get through it quickly before my digital copy was returned. Otherwise I would have liked to take breaks and emotionally recover. I‘m emotionally drained now 😭😭 3y

Fit this for culturally diverse authors! Taking place from 1990 and 2016 concerning the conflicts in Pakistan and Afghanistan, two young people, Anvar and Safwa, will be challenged by their culture and faith as they deal with being Islamic refugees in San Francisco, CA. Themes like generational gaps, cultural conflicts, gender roles and the dream to be Americanize come into play as they deal with being outsiders post 9/11.

Based on this cover, I would never have picked this up to read. One of our Random House reps though has been telling me repeatedly to give it a chance and I‘m so glad I listened. I‘m about a third of the way through and it‘s so good. There have been so many lines that I‘ve stopped to read aloud to my husband.
