Set in modern-day Tel Aviv, a young man,Koby Franco, receives an urgent phone call from a female soldier. Learning that his estranged father may have been a victim of a suicide bombing in Hadera, Koby reluctantly joins the soldier in searching for clues. His death would certainly explain his empty apartment and disconnected phone line. As Koby tries to unravel the mystery of his father's death, he finds himself piecing together not only the last few months of his father's life but his entire identity. With thin, precise lines and luscious watercolors, Rutu Modan creates a portrait of modern Israel, a place where sudden death mingles with the slow dissolution of family ties. Exit Wounds is the North American graphic-novel debut from one of Israel's best-known cartoonists. Modan has received several awards in Israel and abroad, including the Best Illustrated Children's Book Award from the Israel Museum in Jerusalem four times and Young Artist of the Year by the Israel Ministry of Culture. She is a chosen artist of the Israel Cultural Excellence Foundation.

Casey helped me read a comic from my Litsy stack before bed last night. I‘m gonna have to seek out Rutu Modan‘s short comics now, because this was very well done. I also really appreciated the interview at the end for the insight it gave me into the Israeli comics scene.

UwannaPublishme That sweet face! 🐶❤️ 2y

I loved this just as much upon rereading as I did 15 years ago when the English translation (from Hebrew by Noah Stollman) first came out. It‘s been so long that I didn‘t even remember what happened… That‘s a bonus! Because it‘s a pageturner with surprises, about ordinary people in Tel Aviv. Nuanced character development, all the feels, & absolutely gorgeous clear-line artwork, similar to the style in Tintin comics.

It's between a pick and a so-so because the actual story - missing father, father-son issues - is not really resolved. The ending was rushed and odd. Still, I enjoyed reading it.

Koby is a cab driver in Tel-Aviv. Life is predictable until he gets a call to pick up a young female soldier. He soon finds out she believes his estranged father (her lover) was killed in a recent bombing and wants his help to identify him. This begins an unlikely friendship and a journey to discover the truth about the man they both can‘t let go.

#MarchMadness I wasn't able to get a copy of March so I substituted the graphic novel Exit Wounds for March. This is the3rd or 4th GN I tried, the media just isn't for me. This story follows Kobi, a young man who's estranged from his father when he gets word that his dad may have been involved in a terrorist attack. Kobi attempts to trace his father's whereabouts and in the process discovers more than he imagined. #SetonHall

JenP That was a quick start. 7y
Cinfhen It was a graphic novel and just under 200 pages, so it flew by! The rest are gonna be blood suckers!!! And I already lost Princeton 😫 7y
Reviewsbylola Graphic novels aren't really my thing either. I keep trying but usually they just feel rushed and I can't fully engage. 7y

Mini library #bookhaul In preparation for #MarchMadness I need to make a few replacements because several teams I've chosen, I've already read the accompanying novel. Hope that's ok @JenP 🙃🙄Have Ya'll filled out your brackets?!?

JenP Perfect. Substitutions are allowable if you've already read a book. Good luck! 7y

Cinfhen When do we start reading @JenP 7y
JenP @Cinfhen March 16. 7y
Kalalalatja @JenP do we have to substitute books if we have already read them, or do they count anyway? 7y
JenP @Kalalalatja you can't count previously read books in the reading score points otherwise some participants would end up with an advantage before the challenge starts. So for reading score only books read during the challenge time frame count. You won't have time to read every book on the bracket so you can also just opt to read books you haven't read yet rather than substitute 7y
Kalalalatja @JenP okay, thanks for clarifying 👍😊 7y
Reviewsbylola I haven't read Hausfrau but I own it so I'm curious to see what you think of it! 7y
Cinfhen I've been wanting to read this one for awhile @Reviewsbylola 7y
Kalalalatja @JenP just another quick question: does rereading count? 😊 7y
JenP @Kalalalatja yes, rereading counts 7y

I found so much to identify with in both their stores, both as a woman and as a fatherless child--but regardless of personal experience, Modan's characters are always infinitely human, vulnerable, flawed and relatable. They inhabit a reality that can be just as messy, and with the same chance for eerily fateful poetry, as our own.

I would like to have read more books this month but vacation. My family tends to vacation hard--driving, sightseeing, walking, hiking, early bed, early mornings. As a result, I tend to be too distracted and never get much reading done away from home.

I really liked the setting and some of the character work here, but the art didn't click with me like I hoped it would. I think it's the opposite of my issue with Adrian Tomine! So maybe I'm just picky. But the narrative is really good and I definitely think it's worth your time to check out and see if it resonates. And it's always a pleasure to read a comic set outside North America / Europe. (This was #24in48 book five.)
