The Wandering Fire
The Wandering Fire: Book Two of the Fionavar Tapestry | Guy Gavriel Kay
12 posts | 21 read | 1 reading | 4 to read
The Wandering Fire is the second novel of Guy Gavriel Kay’s critically acclaimed fantasy trilogy, The Fionavar Tapestry. A mage’s power has brought five university students from our world into a realm where an ancient evil has freed itself from captivity to wreak revenge on its enemies… The ice of eternal winter has reached out to enshroud Fionavar, the first of all worlds. For the Unraveller has broken free after millennia enchained—and now his terrible vengeance has begun to take its toll on mortals and immortals, mages and warriors, dwarves and the lios alfar, the Children of Light. Only five men and women of our own world, brought by magic across the Tapestry of worlds to the very heart of the Weaver’s pattern, can hope to wake the allies they so desperately need. Yet none can foretell whether even these beings out of legend have the power to shatter the Unraveller’s icy grip of death upon the land… From the Trade Paperback edition.

I think this had potential to make me feel so much but then characters felt a bit flat and that murdered my feelings.

This was quite dark: the war was coming and that was a major threat all the time. There were also lighter moments. This was a bit slow.

This was easier to read now when the world was familiar and there were some really awesome creatures in it.

This was better than the first installment but is definitely where things get dire. I‘m hoping that the conclusion will be less bleak. I kept thinking this is some weird mashup between Zelazny‘s Amber series and The Once and Future King.

#BookReport
This week I finished two #CalibreRoulette titles and the followup to one of them. I enjoyed all three. I also started book two in the Fionavar Tapestry.

#WeeklyForecast
My goal for next week is to finish the Fionavar Tapestry trilogy and get started on whatever title #BookSpin chooses for me.

I‘m finally starting book two in the Fionavar Tapestry after putting it off for a month. Callie approves of this.

I loved this second book in the Fionavar trilogy! All of the characters‘s storylines (and there are a lot of amazing characters) were really expanded. I loved everything about each character‘s path and there are some really fun classic characters that further the story (but I don‘t want to spoiler who they are!) I highly recommend this to fantasy and classical fantasy lovers!

1. The Wandering Fire, listening to The Ghost Bride. 2. Circe 3. Buying a new book with a crushed spine or that one random page that is bent for some reason

I found THE WANDERING FIRE's personal-to-mythic ratio much more to my tastes than THE SUMMER TREE's, but my interest still waned over the last third or so, when the magic ramped up. Sadness.

Still, I enjoyed most of the book and had a great time considering what Kay does with the idea of stories that carry down through worlds. He situates this trilogy so it echoes the old tales and one can conceivably believe everything published later echoes IT.

I've got a serious amount of reading to do today, but I feel all sluggish and muddled so all I managed this morning was a single chapter of UNSETTLING CANADA.

I'm most excited about THE WANDERING FIRE, despite my issues with my reread of THE SUMMER TREE. It's been 11 years since I read it, and apparently the only thing I remember is the Arthurian component and the stuff that carried over from book one.
