It did take a while for the murder to happen in this installment of the Verlaque and Bonnet series, but I liked it better than previous installments that had long buildups to the murder. I read this quickly, as I often do, and it met my expectations for an escapist mystery novel.

The mysteries are very much secondary considerations for me in this series. I love the little details about Aix-en-Provence (like the black and white tiled foyers, each with a chair in the corner) and I love the characters, especially Antoine Verlaque whose grumpiness is only relieved by good food, local wine and an imported cigar.

You may be wondering why I read a Christmas book at the end of February. I started this book at the end of December but fell into a huge reading slump. I just got out of the slump and devoured this book in a few days.

This is a charming cozy mystery set in France. If you canā€t take a trip to France, this book may be the next best thing!
