A Heart of Blood and Ashes
A Heart of Blood and Ashes | Milla Vane
22 posts | 15 read | 10 to read
A generation past, the western realms were embroiled in endless war. Then the Destroyer came. From the blood and ashes he left behind, a tenuous alliance rose between the barbarian riders of Parsathe and the walled kingdoms of the south. That alliance is all that stands against the return of an ancient eviluntil the barbarian king and queen are slain in an act of bloody betrayal. Though forbidden by the alliance council to kill the corrupt king responsible for his parents murders, Maddek vows to avenge them, even if it costs him the Parsathean crown. But when he learns it was the kings daughter who lured his parents to their deaths, the barbarian warrior is determined to make her pay. Yet the woman Maddek captures is not what he expected. Though the last in a line of legendary warrior-queens, Yvenne is small and weak, and the sharpest weapons she wields are her mind and her tongue. Even more surprising is the marriage she proposes to unite them in their goals and to claim their thronesbecause her desire for vengeance against her father burns even hotter than his own

I am now listening to the Fated Mates on this episode and 1) I still find their cisnormativity tiring & 2) I think they are way off base with this book being about men fearing women

Welp, I bought this and then assumed I wouldn't like it (I make good choices!) but this book fucking RULES. Ate this right up, looking forward to eating up the next book too.

Another #bookspinbingo done!
This book had so much potential and starts really strong. This is an epic romance fantasy and very original world building. However, midway it drags and the main character‘s conflict just becomes annoying. There are also major points of the end I strongly dislike. *Content warning for assault (off page) and spoiler in comment.
#AudioJune listen done, I think reading it in book form may be better.

Nessavamusic Also content warning for loss of a child. 14mo

I am posting one book per day from my to-be-read collection. No description and providing no reason for wanting to read it, I just do. Some will be old, some will be new - don‘t judge me I have a lot of books.
Join the fun if you want. This is day 132.

My favorite book of the year so far! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ All the stars. This book was epic! I could go on about the world Vane built and the fantastic characters, or the story that had me laughing and in tears. Just so amazingly good!

thegirlwiththelibrarybag Intriguing! I‘ve downloaded and am charging my kindle... 2y
CoffeeK8 This book is really amazing, and the world building is phenomenal! 2y

On tonight's walk I listened to the newest episode of Fated Mates. The hosts talked about one of my favorite more recent books, the attached Milla Vane. They enjoyed it as much as I did and had some very interesting insights.

The sky was so hazy, it came out very weird in this picture.

This book reminded me of another epic fantasy/romance series I enjoyed - the Kushiel Legacy, but with more sex. And more monsters. And far more enemies-to-lovers trope. Great world building, well-written character development, and all the shirtless barbarian races you could need...

BookNAround Hey Aimee, when we moved my son to college the other day, I found more things that should have gone into the box I sent you under his piles of stuff on the dining room table so be on the lookout for a second box. No wonder the first one seemed so empty to me! I will get my sh*t together someday! 2y
bluestocking.book.nerd No worries! Thanks! 2y

This was unexpected, it came highly recommended but as I don‘t read much fantasy, I wasn‘t sure if it would suit my vibe. I loved it! Fast paced and thrilling, the story was intense and a bit jarring but also fun and filled with great characters to cheer on. I will definitely read the sequel! #Bookspin #Bookspinbingo @TheAromaofBooks

Cuddle time with the pups and a new book! So nice that it is chilly enough to curl up with a blanket! That is a treat in Texas in September!

I received my first Baecrate today. It's a book box that features romance books. I decided to try it out and August was the perfect month because it features one of my favorite authors. I really like the Snaccidents Happen lunch bag and the mask that says "I closed my book for this".

StayCurious I‘ll have to check out her new series 2y

I haven‘t posted in so long(it‘s been a hell of a year) but I have to share these books! These are the perfect mix of fantasy and romance! Monsters, magic, and sexy barbarian warriors😍👍

CoffeeK8 The first one was great! I can‘t wait to read the second one 2y
Daughter-of-words @CoffeeK8 I liked the first one better overall but the second book had such a good love story❤️🔥 2y

You lose points with me right out of the gate when you say dragons and then don‘t give me real dragons. It makes me pout.

This was okay. I had too high of standards going into it, I think. The dialogue is super stilted and the book feels too long for what little is actually accomplished. Also, I am a fan of great world building but the author may have taken it a little bit too far. It was a solid 80% of the book. The sex scenes were impressive.
