Laura McKowen‘s relationship with alcohol absolutely consumed every aspect of her life, putting herself and those she loved in real danger. Honest, heartbreaking and inspiring, “We Are the Luckiest” pulls you through a woman severely addicted to alcohol and how she battled shame, denial and self hatred to now live a sober, happy life. It‘s a book that would make even the most casual drinker rethink their relationship with alcohol.

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ Did Dry January and have kept it going. Not sure how far I‘ll take it, but I‘ve read some “quit lit” books recently and really enjoyed this one.

Erin.Elizabeth10 I read Quit Like a Woman in November and haven‘t really had a drink since. Not sure how long it will last, but enjoying it for now! 2y
fredthemoose @Erin.Elizabeth10 I loved Quit Like a Woman! Listened about a year ago just to take it in. Maybe I should@re-listen to that next… 2y
Erin.Elizabeth10 @fredthemoose Yeah! And I should give this one a try 2y

Good. I‘ll be sending this one to a few friends I know who may need some encouragement. Gave me another peek into understanding addiction. This book is brave and honest. No typical self-help. I love Laura McKowen through Home Podcast and so glad she wrote this book to share with the world! #bookspin #nospin @TheAromaofBooks

Reading this book to better understand addiction, family history, and my own relationship with mind altering substances. The last year has been many obstacles, and we are all working through more. One blessing, and certainly the greatest, is celebrating my sister‘s 1 year of sobriety from opioids this month. I am so proud of her. Times are hard, but turning to mind altering, addictive substances is not always the answer.

Kerri Maher's new Grace Kelly novel THE GIRL IN WHITE GLOVES just launched this week, so I was thrilled she could find time to share a #read99women recommendation with us! http://www.greermacallister.com/blog/2020/2/23/read99women-kerri-maher

#lifeinshanghai is composed of long, exhausting days & busy weekends. My work-life balance has been severally compromised since moving here &, even before now, adjusting to this new life has been hard. I‘m struggling to see the positives now that my family & I are #stuckinshanghai but trying to focus on books, challenges & journaling, hobbies that help me grow but which have been too long neglected. #soberinshanghai #currentlyreading #readinggoals

DocBrown What brings you there? When did you arrive? How long are you going to stay? 4y
TrishB They work very long hours in China, culturally I can see work/life balance would be hard. 4y

“... alcohol is the only drug you have to explain not using.” (70)

Funnily enough, since moving to Shanghai I‘d been drinking less but I also feel I‘m in overlapping cultures (China, foreigners) that have socialization foundations grounded even MORE in drinking. And that‘s obviously only heightened since #startingsober

megnews Wow! Never thought of it in that way but so true. I have 2 grandfathers, 2 great aunts, a great grandfather and his 7 brothers and their dad who were all alcoholics. I rarely to never drink and always find myself having to explain. I think I‘ll use this line next time. 4y

As I look to be more honest about my ‘not-a-problem-but-its-caused-problems‘ relationship with drinking I came across this book and author. McKowen‘s openness is encouraging & enlightening as I struggle to accept my worth despite my shame. I‘m really glad there are books and voices and woman who have the courage to be so vulnerable in sharing their stories. May I too, be counted among them, no matter how minor. 🙂

Cosmos_Moon Have you listened to Home Podcast? That‘s how I came across this book. It is Laura McKowen & Holly Whitaker. I started listening to it last year when my sister entered rehab for opioids & I was looking for outlets to help me understand addiction. I started listening to it everyday on my way home from work & started to question my drinking. Just listening to it, I naturally slowed down & stopped for a while. There are no new episodes but it‘s good. 4y
dixi_e I haven‘t but I will hunt it down now! Thanks for the recommendation. In less than a week I‘ll be one year sober. ☺️😄 3y

Anthony is out of town for work tonight, so this floof and I are reading the tagged book, drinking some Cup of Calm tea, and relaxing before bed. I‘m still sore, but looking forward to going to work tomorrow. I am so lucky to have a job that I‘m excited to go to, a full week before I‘m required to go back.
