Pickpick

⭐️⭐️⭐️ Not quite as enjoyable as the first collection, but still a good read. I loved when Hornby bought and/or read books that I love such as Another Bullshit Night in Suck City (Flynn) and A Man Without a Country (Vonnegut). Y‘all should stack those, btw, so I‘m tagging them below. ? PS. I think I‘ll steer clear of the Motley Crüe biography.

KathyWheeler I love these books! I also have (edited) 5y

britt_brooke @KathyWheeler I found The first two installments at Goodwill then ordered the other 2 from Thriftbooks. Wish I‘d just gotten the complete collection. Fun reads! 5y
KathyWheeler @britt_brooke They really are! I love it when he talks about books I‘ve read, but I even enjoy the essays about books I know nothing about. 5y
britt_brooke @KathyWheeler Same here! It‘s like a bonding experience. And I‘ve stacked quite a few. 5y
Reviewsbylola Yeah he has some books that I‘m not at all interested in but I think that‘s a good thing. Lord help me if I stacked even half of the books he writes about. 🤣 5y
Reviewsbylola My husband enjoyed that one. The Heroin Diaries is one of his favorites and I read it for him. 😆 5y
britt_brooke @Reviewsbylola You‘re a good wife! 😆 5y
Reviewsbylola It was when we first met. I‘m not as accommodating these days. 🤣🤣 5y

And what would happen if we never read the classics? There comes a point in life, it seems to me, where you have to decide whether you're a Person of Letters or merely someone who loves books, and I'm beginning to see that the book lovers have more fun.

Appropriate title but when #springcleaning this year this one stays. #marchmadness

Reviewsbylola I love this series. I keep hoping for another release but I think he is done writing the column. Maybe? 7y

My first attempt at Vanillapen! This #greatquote by Nick Hornby says it all. He also says reading shouldn't feel like hard work and not to worry about what one "should" be reading. #somethingforsept @RealLifeReading

Bookzombie Love this! 8y
DivineDiana Good job! I still have a very hard time doing this. Feel a sort of responsibility to the author to hang in, believing the end will make it all worth while. Actually, dealing with this now. The author is well loved. 8y
PurpleyPumpkin Love this quote! I'll try to remember it the next time I'm having a hard time getting through a book. I seem to be unable to stop reading something I'm not enjoying. I feel like I'm going to miss out! Sometimes the book gets better. Sometimes it doesn't. C'est la vie!💜 8y
DebinHawaii Great quote! I am getting better at this lately! 👍👍😬 8y
ValerieAndBooks @BookishMarginalia @TheLondonBookworm @Ebooksandcooks @Bookzombie yay glad you all agree! There are just so many books out there ❤️and one can always try again (but I rarely do try again with abandoned books). @DivineDiana it can be hard to just quit a book sometimes, true. But think of the others waiting for you ?. You won't be a worse person if you feel a certain author isn't "speaking " to you at the moment. 8y
ValerieAndBooks @PurpleyPumpkin it can be hard sometimes to decide whether to bail but the older I get the easier it is for me to "just do it". @DebinHawaii it gets easier the more we do it, true...none of us should feel bad about it ? 8y
Bklover I bail on books but I don't admit that is what I am doing. I quietly move it down the stack by my bed, leave it on my "currently reading" list, and then move on. That way I fool myself into thinking I will get back to it. Someday. 8y
CynCruz23 Nice quote! I've underlined tons of other bookish lines in Hornby's Polysyllabic Essay Collection as well. He gets it! 8y
Hugoreads I bail without guilt...well, not too much guilt...... 8y
ValerieAndBooks @Bklover I do that too-- put them back with my TBRs, then when I do my occasional cullings, they tend to go. 8y
ValerieAndBooks @CynCruz23 Hornby is so quotable. Love him! 8y
ValerieAndBooks @Hugoreads there is almost always a bit of guilt when bailing. But I've learned that I feel more guilty wasting time on a book I'm not enjoying 😊! 8y
BibliOphelia This is something I'm working on. @Bklover Me too, although I have found that reading is best with the right book at the right time. There are books I just could not get into at the time that I tried later and fell in love with! 8y
