Ashes (Bound for Schools & Libraries) | 
Spending Friday night by starting this, the third in a trilogy. I‘ll review all at once when this one is done but am liking this historical fiction series primarily about two young enslaved people constantly trying to find their own freedom.
I would use this book in a classroom because it is still relevant today. It is still relevant because there are people still fighting for freedom. But it also has themes like discovering one's purpose, which children can relate to. I also love this author and have read her other book, “Speak“. I think this would be a good author to introduce to my students.
pickThis was an excellent historical fiction book because the theme provides insight and understanding of today's problems as well as those of the past. Some people are still fighting for freedom in today's society which is one of the book's themes.
pickAn enjoyable, fitting end to an excellent trilogy of historical fiction for middle grade readers. This trilogy isn‘t afraid to face difficult issues in an age appropriate way with dignity and compassion.

Spent the weekend finishing Chains, flying through Forge, and now I am finally on Ashes! I‘m teaching Chains for the first time this year, and after the second book, I wish I could read all three with my kids! I‘m hoping some of them will pick up the next two books on their own after we finish together. #teachersoflitsy

The Seeds of America trilogy 🇺🇸
pickThis was the best ending to the trilogy I could possibly think of. I fell in love with Chains and Forge in middle school. By the time Ashes came out, though, I had forgotten most of it. I had to re-read the trilogy, and fell in love with it all over again. This book was totally worth the wait. It was absolutely amazing! (And my dog seemed to love when I read it to him, too!!)
