Vincent Van Gogh: Portrait of an Artist | Jan Greenberg, Sandra Jordan

I would use this book in a classroom because I think the children would be very interested in this artist, especially because he cut off his own ear. This book is also good to read to a class because we can then move our discussion to his artwork and legacy.

This was a good historical fiction book because the stories accurately reflect the spirit and values of the time, as well as the events. The author researched and read about medieval times to have a better understanding and knowledge of this time period. The story takes place when the English spoke middle English and the author tried to keep it similar but more readable for English speakers today. So, the language of the narrative was appropriate.

I read this entire book and the first chapter made me cry. It honestly portrays the realities of life for today‘s children. An example of this would be bullying. The characters are both convincing and credible to today‘s child. I feel like most children can relate to these characters or they can feel compassionate towards these characters. This book is both a window and a mirror.

I would use this book in my future classroom because I think it is a good example of a mirror and a window because it helps children who either are in the LGBTQ community see themselves and it helps children view other people‘s perspectives and how their lives are different but the same. The book helps children enlarge their personal points of views of the world and I think it is beneficial to have books where children see themselves.
