As a child Hester Wyatt escaped slavery, but now the dark skinned beauty is a dedicated member of Michigan's Underground railroad, offering other runaways a chance at the freedom she has learned to love. When one of her fellow conductors brings her an injured man to hide, Hester doesn't hesitate...even after she is told about the price on his head. The man in question is the great conductor known as the "Black Daniel" a vital member of the North's Underground railroad network. But Hester finds him so rude and arrogant, she begins to question her vow to hide him. When the injured and beaten Galen Vachon, aka, the Black Daniel awakens in Hester's cellar, he is unprepared for the feisty young conductor providing his care. As a member of one of the wealthiest free Black families in New Orleans, Galen has turned his back on the lavish living he is accustomed to in order to provide freedom to those enslaved in the South. However, as he heals he cannot turn his back on Hester Wyatt. Her innocence fills him like a breath of fresh air and he is determined to make this gorgeous and intelligent woman his own...Yet...there are traitors to be discovered, slave catchers to be evaded and Hester's heart to be won before she and Galen can find the freedom that only true love can bring.

3.5⭐️ I read this for the most recent #bookcougars #readalong. For the most part I enjoyed the book, but I didn‘t expect it to be as steamy as it was. As I said during the chat session, I enjoyed the historical context of the book, but the rest of the story seemed to be a bit contrived in places. I‘m not much of a #romance reader, but I was glad to dip my toes in this genre. #2024 #fiction #bookreview #historicalfiction #fiction

The ultimate reason I didn't like it is because I did not love the juxtaposition of spicy hot romance with a part of history filled with darkness and death. I think I prefer my romances to be a bit more "fun." I found it jarring to be part of the group of characters learning about John Brown's death (he is a very minor character in the book), then literally the next page our sexy protagonists are all over each other. Just not for me.

Suet624 Haha. Yeah, sounds confusing. 3mo

This was amazing. It might be the 1st time I've read a romance book that I've learned actual history from. I'm also learning a lot about romance books and I'm very sad to see the genre not getting the respect it deserves. Read what you want. Read for fun. Screw the reading snobs. I will read more by this author. #fightthepatriarchy #readromance

#Blackvoices @ShyBookOwl I recommend any book written by Beverly Jenkins. I especially love her historical romances. They are set during and after the civil war and I always walk away learning something new about the life and struggles for African Americans during this time.

CrowCAH She‘s a great person to talk to in person; a supporter of the romance genre! 4y

This was excellent, a classic romance built around a fictional account of the Underground Railroad pre-civil war. So incredibly good. Though I think I would recommend the text version, the narrator is just OK, with somewhat odd pacing. Otherwise I highly recommend to anyone who loves period romance! #romantsy #audiobook

I've been trying out romance novels through Libby and thought I'd give Beverly Jenkins a try (also happens to be a great #readharder pick for romance written by an aoc!) . I'm so glad I tried it because I thoroughly enjoyed this steamy historical featuring smart, saucy underground railroad conductors finding love and freeing slaves like the bad asses they are.

Listening to #Indigo written by the Slayer of Words herself seems like a great way to kick off Black History Month. Also, if you‘re looking for a classic in genre fiction for Book Riot‘s Read Harder challenge, Indigo is absolutely a classic romance!

I read this book becauseI enjoyed some of the latter connected books. I wouldn't say this was one of her stronger ones. Still, enjoyable.
