Doris is playing hide and seek with her sisters when she‘s kidnapped and taking to this new country. All she can think about is returning to her family back in England.

Their feet were clad too, in objects called boots which were made of animal hide. They rode tightly up the leg to the knee, for some unfathomable reason.
Some, though, wore the foot objects called shoes, made of either animal hide or even stranger - wood. What crazed mind conjured up that idea?

This book started off really good, but dragged in the middle and the ending was just sort of meh. I think it‘s a fascinating concept and is a great example of what if and the general rule that all humans are evil.
In a world where Africa is the continent of advanced technology and the slave trade is reversed, follow the life of a slave girl from England.
2/5 stars parts are really well written and engaging, but a lot of the book is very slow.

Although it took me WAY longer than I'd have liked, I really enjoyed this book. The ending was a bit unsatisfying for me, but overall, a great read.

I had to come back to correct my earlier post - this isn't actually about Indigenous people in Canada! I'm still going to read it, but just didn't want people to be misled by my last post which references how and why I chose this book.

Alright guys, my next read is up. This is the first book I thought of switching to from Catch-22 (but I ultimately landed on Big Little Lies). In the height of the BLM movement last year and everyone being more open about racial issues, I decided to try and read more about Indigenous people and their history in Canada. I bought the book but haven't gotten around to reading it until now! #bookfourof2021

I hope everyone has a wonderful February and enjoys celebrating Black History Month in the US and around the world, and LGBTQ+ history month in the UK! Because of pandemic brain fog I‘m struggling a bit with planning my reading but this is the top of my list to read next by a Black British author finally getting the recognition she deserves the last few years

1. Warm, but with a nice breeze. Perfect weather for a book in the shade.
2. Tent! I love camping, being in nature, and especially cooking over a campfire.
3. I only read Blonde Roots this month and I would not like to be any of those characters.
4. Same as every morning - coffee and reading. But perhaps with the added benefit of homemade pancakes!

Getting very absorbed into this flipped world.

I found this book to be really challenging in regards to thinking about what slavery would have been like if the shoe had been on the other foot and it was white people who were enslaved. What would our society look like now? How would that have played out, would we have had our own form of Jim Crow laws in the US? This book was thought provoking and interesting. Highly recommend.

So I've read the first 50 pages and I am intrigued. This story is a switch about what would it be like if white people were enslaved by Africans.

My hair matches my book cover 😂! I'm on book 4 for the month and having a hard time sticking with it. One because Marlon James' book is now in my hands and two because it is taking a minute for it to get going. This book serves triple purposes. It is for #ReadingBlackout this month. It is helping me in reading more of what I already own. And it will help me check off the alternative history task for #ReadHarder. (cont. in comments)

I picked this one up in a 5 books for Q9 charity shop haul. I approach it with a bit of trepidation, as it is a reimagining of the transatlantic slave trade in which white Europeans are the ones enslaved.

The author is from British and Nigerian backgrounds, and The Guardian called it a "clever satirical novel".

And the cover art is pretty darn cool.
