The Annotated Alice: The Definitive Edition (The Annotated Books)
The Annotated Alice: The Definitive Edition (The Annotated Books) | Lewis Carroll
7 posts | 10 read | 6 to read
The culmination of a lifetime of scholarship, The Annotated Alice is a landmark event in the rich history of Lewis Carroll and cause to celebrate the remarkable career of Martin Gardner. For over half a century, Martin Gardner has established himself as one of the world's leading authorities on Lewis Carroll. His Annotated Alice, first published in 1959, has over half a million copies in print around the world and is beloved by both families and scholarsfor it was Gardner who first decoded many of the mathematical riddles and wordplay that lay ingeniously embedded in Carroll's two classic stories, Alice's Adventures in Wonderland and Through the Looking Glass. Forty years after this groundbreaking publication, Norton is proud to publish the Definitive Edition of The Annotated Alice, a work that combines the notes of Gardner's 1959 edition with his 1990 volume, More Annotated Alice, as well as additional discoveries drawn from Gardner's encyclopedic knowledge of the texts. Illustrated with John Tenniel's classic, beloved artalong with many recently discovered Tenniel pencil sketchesThe Annotated Alice will be Gardner's most beautiful and enduring tribute to Carroll's masterpieces yet.

I live near amazing used bookstores. One of my favorite things to do is to treasure hunt for beautiful hardcover editions of some of my favorite books. I try not to buy new but enjoy the hunt of seeking lovely editions of Folio Society books, Penguin Drop Caps and Penguin Clothbound books. I stopped into a store after a nearby lunch to see if they still had a Folio Society Pickwick Papers by Dickens and instead found these treasures- all used!

Claireluana I love those editions! Swoon! 7y
Notafraidofwords How much do they go for used ? 7y
HardcoverHearts @Notafraidofwords - depending on condition, I find them from $8-$15 per book. I especially love Friends Of the Library sales. Those are the cheapest. 7y
Kimberlone Those annotated editions are amazing! I have the 7y
HardcoverHearts @Kimberlone The bookseller said this specific edition is especially good. I also have the Little Women one. They are wonderful works! 7y

I have a confession to make #littens. I hate this book. I find Carroll's obsession with little girls so creepy. And the annotated edition provides insight into the man that gave me the creeps particularly his painting and photography of naked children and his possible intention to marry 11-year-old Alice Liddell. None of this is known for sure but it was enough to change the story for me. #seasonsreadings2016 #bookwithpictures

The *pick* here is for this edition. Annotations make this story so much better, when you consider all the in-jokes and satire of upper crust children education present throughout. The actual Alice story is pretty drab and dull. I had to finish this one myself as the kids got sick of it. (For some reason they weren't into 19th century wordplay.) if you must read this, pick up the annotated version so Carroll's ramblings make sense.

Greg Oh, and this wraps up the popsugar reading list. #100yearsbeforeiwasborn 3 months now to read whatever I want! 8y

"Curiouser and curiouser!" Our current bedtime story. My sons like finding bits from the recent films in these original stories, and I like the annotations about Victorian life: jokes, sayings, songs and politics of the day lost on the modern reader. Oh, and an Alice Lego mini figure ???

SecretLivesOfFictionLovers Oooh would so love to read this! Must see if my local bookstore has it or Amazon. 😊 8y
AVChrista I found my copy at a Borders or Barnes & Noble years ago. Good luck! 8y
Lizpixie I have a few copies of Alice in my library, one fully illustrated, but I've never seen this one before. Very nice.😍 8y
