A powerful thriller about trauma and forgiveness, from the winner of the International Prize for Arabic Fiction During the violence and chaos of the Lebanese Civil War, a car pulls up to a roadblock on a narrow side street in Beirut. After a brief and confused exchange, several rounds of bullets are fired into the car, killing everyone inside except for a small boy of four or five. The boy is taken to the hospital, adopted by one of the assassins, and raised in a new family. My father used to kidnap and kill people begins this haunting tale of a child who was raised by the murderer of his real family. The narrator of Confessions doesnt shy away from the horrible truth of his murderous fatherinstead he confronts his troubled upbringing and seeks to understand the distortions and complexities of his memories, his war-torn country, and the quiet war that rages inside of him.

DAY 28: #bookishconfession #riotgrams

I've mentioned this before, but I have a real problem bailing. I've bailed on fewer than 10 books ever. I'm so hard-headed.

Josie I usually try to finish everything I start! Unless it's just so bad that I can't handle it. 7y
Books88 I usually stick it out till the end as well, I just bailed on my first book in over a year. 7y
JenP Me too. I've only bailed on one book in the last 5 years 7y

AWahle The older I get and the longer my TBR gets, the easier it is to bail. I am also very stubborn, but if I don't have time to read what I want, I won't waste my time with something that isn't for me. 7y
DaniRa Me too! I will usually push through but there is an occasional book here and there that just forces me to give up. 7y
Purple610 When I was younger I bailed all the time. Now - completely different story. There is only one I hadn't finished in the last year and it's because I left it sit too long and couldn't remember enough detail of the story to pick it back up where I had left it. 7y
Reviewsbylola I can bail pretty easily if it's early on. If I've already invested a lot of time I feel the need to finish so I can "get credit" for it. Stupid I know! That's why I finished Idaho. ? 7y
merelybookish I have become a big skimmer. I don't bail often but I will skip over a lot of material to be done sooner. 7y
Jaimelire Me too! I have bailed on one book in the last few years. Honestly I enjoy most books I read. 7y
Smangela Same here!! I can remember 1 book in the past 3 years and I'm not sure of any before then. What if I end up liking it lol and @Jaimelire I do too! I feel like my Goodreads ratings probably annoy people but I just like most stories! 7y
vivastory Same here, for me I feel like it can be a slippery slope. I don't want to bail every time a book hits a dull section. I think the reading valleys can be as instructive as the peaks. 7y
britt_brooke @Reviewsbylola I totally understand what you mean and I do it, too, haha! 7y
LeahBergen I can't even remember the last book that I bailed on. I'm such a "finisher". ? 7y
britt_brooke @LeahBergen 😆🙌🏻🙌🏻 7y
britt_brooke @JenP @Purple610 @LeahBergen We at least know that the four of us will finish IJ! 🙌🏻🙌🏻 7y
Purple610 @britt_brooke 😂 too funny 7y
LeahBergen Sad, but true. I'll do it if it kills me! 😂😂 7y
britt_brooke @AWahle I need to be more like this! 7y
britt_brooke @merelybookish I've started doing that, too. 👍🏻 7y
Kshakal I used to never give up on a book, no matter how bad it was, and then my mom told me that life is to short for bad books, but I am still a bit stubborn when it comes to books... I have only given up on 5 books total! 7y
britt_brooke @Kshakal Your mom is right, of course! And yet, we remain stubborn. 😁 7y
Sarah83 I know what you mean. I always think, that the author put so much work in his book that the reader has to honour it. 🤔 7y
britt_brooke @Sarah83 I think that's a big part of it! 7y
Lmstraubie I am the same way. I keep thinking, "It's going to get better. It's going to get better!" 7y
Amandajoy I'm in the "it's going to get better" camp. And there have been times where it has, which only makes it worse! 7y

Only a third into this and I'm already insisting that people buy it. It's so interesting how books in translation give you such a taste for the rhythms and melodies of different languages. An entirely different perspective on living with war.

A little bummed that I'm not going to reach my goal of reading 50 books this year 😔. I'm hoping to get through one or two more but there is no way I'll read 8 before 12/31. Oh well, I'll get it next year.

After the kidnapping and murder of his son during the civil war, a Beiruti man joins the fighting as a vigilante. He opens fire on a car at the demarcation line and kills everyone except a boy who's the age his son would have been if he‘d lived. The man wraps the child in a blanket, takes him home, and raises him, naming him Maroun after his son. Maroun learns the truth on the eve of his father‘s death, and tells his story to a writer named Rabee.

Interesting stream of consciousness style. It can be difficult to follow at times but a great story about identity, family and the worn torn Middle East.

What do you do when you climb a tree and can't see any light?

MrBook Curse the tree for not being tall enough or curse the person who turned the light off. Every voyeur has a difficult task ahead of them to begin with. 😊 How'd I do? 8y
LaurenMagoo @MrBook You did great! 😊 8y

I've heard this is a powerful read so I'm bracing myself. I know next to nothing about the Lebanese Civil War but I'm changing that starting now and thanks to this book.
