Young Hearts Crying
Young Hearts Crying | Richard Yates
2 posts | 2 read | 2 to read
In Young Hearts Crying, Yates movingly portrays a man and a woman from their courtship and marriage in the 1950s to their divorce in the 70s, chronicling their heartbreaking attempts to reach their highest ambitions. Michael Davenport dreams of being a poet after returning home from World War II Europe, and at first he and his new wife Lucy enjoy their life together. But as the decades pass and the success of others creates an oppressive fear of failure in both Michael and Lucy, their once bright future gives way to a life of adultery and isolation. With empathy and grace, Yates creates a poignant novel of the desires and disasters of a tragic, hopeful couple. From the Trade Paperback edition.

When I was young I used to take the same book out of the school library every couple weeks. I don't remember what it was called, but it was graphic novel format about a street cat. And there was one part where he lost his mom? Possibly a flashback? I would cry every time, absolutely inconsolable. My mom had to meet with the librarian and ask her not to let me check out the book.

StillLookingForCarmenSanDiego Aww 😢 that's really sweet & sad. But any book that brings out that kind of emotion in a reader, is a good book. IMO. 6y

Avanders @Reggie but... what can we do? 🤷🏽‍♀️ I think our matches know we tried our best and if they get something that they brought home recently, well.... 😬(ie, I haven't re-checked since I bought the items 😳) 🤞🏽🤞🏽🤞🏽 (edited) 7y
Chelleo That is so my husband! I have to put him on a shopping ban in November so he doesn't buy his Christmas presents! I'm sure your match will enjoy it! 7y
hermyknee I try not to buy new books during exchanges for this very reason, but sometimes I fall into an Amazon hole - I know I would appreciate anything even if I already own it - then I can share it with twice as many people!!! 😻 I'm sure your match will still enjoy it! 7y
ReadingSusan @hermyknee I bought another book since I haven‘t sent it yet. I am still waiting on two items to come. I hope they get here Monday. Anxious to get it in the mail. 7y
