Pain
Pain | Zeruya Shalev
3 posts | 3 read | 9 to read
A powerful, astute novel that exposes how old passions can return, testing our capacity to make choices about what is most essential in life. Ten years after she was seriously injured in a terrorist attack, the pain comes back to torment Iris. But that is not all: Eitan, the love of her youth, also comes back into her life. Though their relationship ended many years ago, she was more deeply wounded when he left her than by the suicide bomber who blew himself up next to her. Iris's marriage is stagnant. Her two children have grown up and are almost independent; she herself has become a dedicated, successful school principal. Now, after years without passion and joy, Eitan brings them back into her life. But she must concoct all sorts of lies to conceal her affair from her family, and the lies become more and more complicated. Is this an impossible predicament, or on the contrary a scintillating revelation of the many ways life's twists and turns can bring us to a place we would never have expected to be?

Zeruya Shalev writes so well about love, marriage and family. In this novel there‘s also pain. The narrator was injured in a terrorist attack on a bus in Jerusalem. Ten years later, the pain returns. So does her first love. An intense book I read for #FoodAndLit #Israel.

MySharonaK What an amazing book! The author herself was injured in a terror attack in Jerusalem (and chef Assaf Granit assisted her). Her books are a gift ❤️ 3y

BarbaraBB @MySharonaK You are right. I don‘t think she would be able to write about pain the way she does without having experienced it 💔 3y
TrishB What a mesmerising cover ❤️ 3y
MySharonaK @BarbaraBB Yes I agree with you💔 it‘s amazing how she‘s channeled it into such beauty. Have you read books by her cousin Meir Shalev? 3y

BarbaraBB @MySharonaK I used to read a lot of Meir Shalev but it‘s a long time ago! 3y
BarbaraBB @Anna40 Me too. My favorite is one that doesn‘t seem to have been translated into English unfortunately. I must be wrong. I read it in Dutch, where it‘s title means ‘The Second Family‘ and it‘s about a female narrator trying to connect with the kids of her new lover. (edited) 3y
LeahBergen Gorgeous photo... again!! 3y

Iris comes alive with raw intensity: emotions, passions, shortcomings. The mundane and deeply personal are juxtaposed. As though Shalev undresses Iris layer by layer until everything is revealed and that in itself is almost painful. This book is fascinating on so many levels. Different book covers used for Israel and US. The paintings alone say a lot about the book. Language is superb. A masterpiece.

@andrew61 I enjoyed reading this interview with Zeruya Shalev and Nicole Krauss (haven't started reading the book yet, have a few good library books to finish first)

andrew61 Thanks for that Anna. Definitely going to try and read her next year. 4y
