The Dew Breaker
The Dew Breaker | Edwidge Danticat
We meet him late in life: a quiet man, a good father and husband, a fixture in his Brooklyn neighborhood, a landlord and barber with a terrifying scar across his face. As the book unfolds, moving seamlessly between Haiti in the 1960s and New York City today, we enter the lives of those around him, and learn that he has also kept a vital, dangerous secret. Edwidge Danticats brilliant exploration of the dew breaker--or torturer--s an unforgettable story of love, remorse, and hope; of personal and political rebellions; and of the compromises we make to move beyond the most intimate brushes with history. It firmly establishes her as one of Americas most essential writers. BONUS: This edition includes an excerpt from Edwidge Danticat's Claire of the Sea Light.

I had a great time at the used bookstore yesterday! Love heading there for backlist titles. I found the tagged book for #ReadingtheAmericas2023 and The Lake House for #AuthorAMonth. 👍🏻 The rest were impulse buys. I was looking for Cormac McCarthy and Kamila Shamsie, too, but they didn‘t have any by either of them. Still a very fun morning!! 😁😁

Pickpick

A friend suggested this book and wow, what a powerful, heartbreaking story about violence and hate, love and forgiveness, remorse, historical legacy, happenstance, and hope. Moving between Haiti in the 1960s and NYC in the present, this book tells the story of a man with a dark secret and how it shapes not only his life and that of his family but also so many others. Recommended.

Went to the used bookstore this weekend intent on splurging. Goal met. #bookhaul

Kaye Looks like a nice stack. I‘m always attracted to odd titles. How about Monkey Hunting ? I need to look that up. 6y
dastevensish @Kaye I‘m just hoping no monkeys are actually hunted. 😉 6y
Kaye Looks like some good reading ahead. I like picking unusual books that I know nothing about. You find lots of hidden gems that way. 6y

Went to a used bookstore I‘ve never been to today, and I was pleasantly surprised at how good their selection was. The only problem is figuring out which one to read next! -Becca

Mitch It‘s a no brainer - it‘s got to be Fingersmith. Brilliantly story, as always, from Sarah Waters 6y
2BR02B @Mitch Seconded. It's my all-time favorite historical novel. 6y
well.read.panda Agreed, these are all great, but Fingersmith is SO much fun. 6y

TheBookstorePodcast @Mitch @2BR02B @well.read.panda I‘ve had Fingersmith on my tbr for YEARS. This solidifies that I definitely will be reading it next! 6y
Mitch You will no be disappointed! @TheBookstorePodcast 6y
BiblioLitten The Fingersmith was good, but not better than The Night Watch. I didn't want the latter to end. 6y

I just so happen to be reading two books set on islands: The Dew Breaker is set in Haiti (and also New York); Moving Sideways Like A Crab is set in Trinidad. Just right for #junetunz #laislabonita (and also #onemoretry at actually continuing posting for #junetunz 😀)

Cinfhen Yay 😊 love when you pop in!! I recently read Moving Forward...I thought it was ok, good for #PrideMonth 7y
Cinfhen And tomorrow is #scars looks like your current read will work again 💟 7y
batsy Thanks for mentioning the Danticat book, I didn't know about this one. Whatever I've read by her I've loved. 7y

I went to the library today to return a whole bunch of books. I told myself I wouldn't take any books outs today, since I don't want to distract myself from reading Middlemarch.

...

I ended up with this small #LibraryHaul. It's only three books though, so at least I left with fewer books than I came in with.

Reading Envy 079: Deliberately Silenced and Preferably Unheard with guest Rima Abunasser http://tinyurl.com/ReadingEnvy079

saresmoore 👍 7y
Lindy This is my favourite Reading Envy podcast so far. I hope you will have Rima on again sometime. You talked about 3 books that changed me: Dewbreaker; When Women Were Birds; & Please Look After Mom. The Queue was already on my TBR & now I've added Our Lady of the Nile. 😀 7y
ReadingEnvy Thank you Lindy. I really want to read Dewbreaker! 7y
andrew61 I listened this morning and was hooked as soon rima started speaking- what a brilliant guest, one of those episodes as ever where i wish i was sat with my pint able to join in your discussion. I read ' claire by the sea light' which was very good, similar narrative form to dewbreaker but i really want to read that now as are all the other books mentioned. Thanks as ever for intelligent listening. 7y
ReadingEnvy @andrew61 Thank you! I am so lucky to know her! Her husband Darin was a guest back in 2015. (I realized we never mentioned this; that's feminism for you!) 7y

#readjanuary day 15: #publishedinthe2000s
It's rather late in the day and the sun is setting and I better post this before the day is over. It's mid-Jan! How are your bookish resolutions and TBRs going?

And for today's prompt, #publishedinthe2000s here are some that I have yet to read. Have you read any of these? Which would you recommend?
